The Daily Pilot got the same press release from the CMPD as the CM PRESS. However, as you will note in reading the above Daily Pilot story, the Pilot forgot to report that the shooter is Hispanic, although this information was part of the CMPD press release.

LATEST ON MESA NORTH SHOOTING

Here's the body of a press release just received at CM PRESS HQ from the CMPD:

At approximately 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 16th, the Costa Mesa Police Department responded to a

reported shooting that had occurred in the parking lot area of Paularino School. The victim, 26 year old
Wilfren Banejas-Rodriguez, had been shot by an unknown male assailant while sitting in the driver’s seat of
his white Ford Expedition. The victim had stopped at the location, while on his way to work as a security
guard, presumably to meet briefly with a friend. The victim was wearing his security officer uniform at the
time.

Shortly after arriving at the location, the unknown assailant [a male Hispanic in his 20's-30's wearing dark clothes and a hoodie] approached the driver’s door of thevictim’s vehicle and began shooting. The victim sustained gunshot injuries to his left arm, torso, and the left shoulder near his neck. He was treated at the scene by Costa Mesa Fire Department personnel and transported to Western Medical Center, Santa Ana. His wounds were considered non-life threatening and he is currently listed in stable condition.

The victim has no known gang affiliations and at this time the incident does not appear have any
association to gang activity. CMPD detectives are investigating the circumstances of the shooting and why
the victim was targeted in the assault. Any persons with information regarding this shooting are
encouraged to contact the Costa Mesa Police Department, Detective Mike Delgadillo (714-754-5197) or
Detective Sergeant Ed Everett (714-754-5395).
