CM PRESS # 454

AH, MORNING IN COSTA MESA

And, even now the roads and freeways are filled with City employees coming in from their far away homes in Mission Viejo, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and other cities.

And, among them will be a few thugs who will show up on Fair Drive to use their City owned computers to call our elected officials "Hitlers," and "murderers," and more.

Meanwhile, out in the neighborhoods of Costa Mesa, the good decent citizens of this city are watching and listening--just as they did before the last election when they rejected the hate and bigotry coming from some out of town employees who tried to defeat Jim Righeimer.

Most of these citizens won't be commenting on blogs.  They're too busy supporting their families.   But, they are watching and listening.  And, from the comments and telelephone calls we're receiving at the CM PRESS, we can tell you they're not pleased with the hate and bigotry they see and they're especially not pleased that it is coming from out of towners who are trying to take over this city.

Meanwhile, some in the media still don't get it.  They're listening to the noise made by a few nutcakes who post hate messages under a slew of different names and they're listening to a local blogger who has never been right on the major issues in Costa Mesa and they think there's a groundswell of support against the present City Council.

But, some in the media, who have been around a while, remember the elections of 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and they remember how the CM PRESS has been right in all of them.  They may even suspect that we're not just reporting the weather, we're helping make it.

The folks who were at the Daily Pilot back in 2000 were the funniest to watch after Chris Steel won a seat on the City Council with our support.

All the haters had been out against him.  The newspapers were against him.  The local establishment was against him.  Even someone in Dana Rohrabacher's office laughed at us when we suggested they support Steel.  He had lost nine times before. No one gave him a chance of winning...except us and the Improvers.

After that election, in which Steel not only won, but did so with more votes than anyone else in the race, we were contacted by reporters wanting to know how such an upset was pulled off.  The low I.Q. haters and bigots were coming up with all kinds of absurd suggestions about how Steel had won.

We were asked to give interviews by a whole bunch of reporters. As we always do, we told them that we don't give interviews and we write our own stuff.  If people want to know what we think, they can read what we ourselves write. We also truthfully told them that they were focusing on the wrong person.  It was the citizens of Costa Mesa who elected Mr. Steel.  We only have one vote.

But here's the secret of how Steel won:  Those supporting Steel outsmarted those who were against him.  Yup, the ordinary citizens of Costa Mesa, ah, out thunk the pros.

That's also the reason why the Improvers have won in every election since then.

That's also why if there is any misguided attempt to recall the four good Councilmembers, it will fail.

THE TEMPERATURE IS EXPECTED TO GO UP TO 88 DEGREES TOMORROW

And, where will Costa Mesa's Mayor be?  Hmmmm?

Will he be bringing ice water to our city workers?  Of course not.  He'll be selfishly working behind the bar to selfishly keep his restaurant employees working and to put food on the table for his wife and six kids.  How selfish can one man be?  This just shows that he doesn't care about the workers. Workers of the world unite!  Go use your City owned computers to write nasty things about the Mayor in comment sections of the newspapers.

CMPD CRACKING DOWN ON DISTRACTED DRIVERS--GOOD!
The CMPD is holding a ‘Zero Tolerance’ Distracted Driving Enforcement Operation between April 13 and April 27, 2011.

Drivers who break the law and place themselves and others in danger will be cited. The current minimum ticket cost is $159, with subsequent tickets costing at least $279.

Distracted driving is a serious traffic safety concern that puts everyone on the road at risk. As a result, law enforcement across the state, including Costa Mesa are increasingly cracking down on cell phone use and texting. This April will see over 225 local agencies plus the 103 CHP Area Commands conducting zero tolerance enforcements.

“We take the issue of distracted driving very seriously.” said Costa Mesa Police Chief Steve Staveley.

“Costa Mesa has already experienced one tragic loss of life in 2010 due to a distracted driver running a red light. If we can prevent further losses through a zero tolerance distracted driving campaign, then I completely support it.”

Drivers who use hand-held devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves. Younger, inexperienced drivers under 20 years old have the highest proportion of distraction-related fatal crashes. In addition, studies show that texting while driving can delay a driver’s reaction time just as severely as having a blood alcohol content of a legally drunk driver.

Studies show that there is no difference in the risks between hands-free and hand-held cell phone conversations, both of which can result in “inattention blindness” which occurs when the brain is not seeing what is clearly visible because the drivers’ focus is on the phone conversation and not on the road.

WANT TO JOIN THE RESISTANCE TO COSTA MESA BEING TAKEN OVER BY OUT OF TOWN INTERESTS?

The Costa Mesa Taxpayers Association looks like it might be a pretty good organization to join to help citizens of Costa Mesa fight the out of town thugs.

This is our city.  We live here.  We send our kids to school here.  We shop here. We pay taxes here.  We vote here.  We are not carpetbaggers who come here and punch time clocks and then leave at  quitting time.

We have no quitting time.  We are full time citizens of Costa Mesa.

Here's the link to their Website where you can learn more and join the resistance.

LAST BUILDING IN CABRINI-GREEN SLUM BEING DEMOLISHED
Link

Cabrini-Green was the idea of "experts" who said it would lead the way to urban renewal in Chicago.

It didn't. Cabrini-Green soon became a gang infested, high crime minority slum.  Whites wanted no part of it.

Costa Mesa also has some slums, albeit smaller than Cabrini-Green, but they should also be demolished.

We have a mealy-mouthed guy on the no-Planning Commission--Rob Dickson--who probably disagrees with us, as he disagreed with us in the past about there being pollution on the Westside or that illegal aliens are hired by factories on our bluffs. This character even sneered at Improvers as "self-described Improvers."

JEFF EAST TELLS YOU THAT WE NEED TO TAKE BACK COSTA MESA

Well, it was a rainy day and there were, like, clouds overhead and well, it was wet and the grass was wet and the people, like, were standing there with downcast eyes in the wet rain, and, golly, some were talking and Costa Mesa is such a swell place, and why we have a big shopping center, and, ah, there are city employees, and geez, the City Council is moving too fast, they need to slow down and, er, smell the flowers, ah, that are wet because there's, like, an overcast sky.

So, you can see from my well reasoned above arguments that we shouldn't do anything about our budget problems.

We need to take, like, the City back from, er, whomever now has it, because, well, it belongs to the out of town employees, and the citizens of Costa Mesa work for them and owe them life time employment and big homes in far away cities.

Link

As of this writing, there is no information on the website about who is behind it.  But scroll down to our earlier articles for more information.

Note that even though the website doesn't tell you anything about who they are, they want to know your personal information.  Why?  Because they want to use you as a puppet to puff up a phony astro-turf organization.

Say, that's not a bad photo of Gary Monahan.  Maybe he can get that framed or put on a business card.

Be sure to patronize Monahan's if you want to support getting our municipal government right sized.

By the way, we would really like to see a list of zip codes where our City employees live.

When we were last able to get some of this information, we found that more than 75% of cops don't live here.  Then, when we tried to get a more recent list and a list not just of our cops but all City employees, the City refused to give us such a list.

No, we didn't ask for a list giving names or other personal information.  We just asked for a list with everything else redacted except zip codes and general job descriptions.

Maybe our new City Council members can get such a list.  We think it would be very revealing to the citizens of Costa Mesa to see just how few of our City employees actually choose to live in Costa Mesa.

Essentially, some non-Indians want to use Eagle feathers for religious purposes.  The court ruled they can't do that, but that Indians recognized by the government as Indians can do that.

This is an important case about religious freedom and it's headed to the Supreme Court where we expect the lower court ruling will be overturned.

Many cases on our basic freedoms often do turn on such seemingly minor things.

WHO IS REPAIR COSTA MESA?

According to this article in the OC Register [HERE], Repair Costa Mesa is composed of Greg Ridge (who often posts as Gericault), Sandy Genis, and Gus Ayer, a former Fountain Valley Councilman.

Ridge and Genis were also the front 'group' (if you can call two people a group) that received union money in an attempt to defeat Jim Righeimer in the last election.

The CM PRESS published their financial disclosure forms.  What the forms showed was that thousands of dollars in out of town money was given to the duo who then printed up flyers and signs against Righeimer and for lefties Windy (sic) Leece and Chris McEvoy.

When last heard from, Ridge and two other people recently called a "big" press conference at City Hall about healing Costa Mesa or something like that.  The press conference was apparently attended by the three and the Daily Pilot.

Yawn.

OUT OF TOWN THUGS WANT TO KEEP PICKING YOUR POCKETS

It looks like the out of town thugs are going to pour money into trying to keep Costa Mesa as Serf City.

We're already seeing a few of their local panty waists step up with overly emotional pleas.

On an intellectual  level we find this interesting as a real world experiment in human group psychology.

The question can be framed this way:  Can the out of town thugs convince the people of Costa Mesa to not act in their own best interests, or can those who can clearly see what's going on convince these same citizens to do what's best for themselves and their families?

WE SEND A LETTER TO THE DAILY PILOT ABOUT THE MENSINGER/WEST 'DEBATE'

3/29/11

Editor Daily Pilot:

Re: Mensinger/West debate on outsourcing

That's a debate on outsourcing?

I read Steve Mensinger's well reasoned piece on outsourcing and it was full of facts and figures; just as one might expect from someone who is logically calling for a certain course of action.

Then, I read the contra piece by Geoff West and found no facts. It was just an over emotional regurgitation of past events. There was no logic. There were no reasoned arguments. It was just plain silly.

Maybe West shouldn't be faulted. There really are no facts to support his position, which seems to be to do nothing and just keep the status quo.

Then again, West's overblown and shrill adjectives not only add nothing to the debate on outsourcing, they also had nothing to the discussion of the root issue about what to do about the ocean of red ink we have in Costa Mesa.

Perhaps you think I'm being too harsh on West? If so, imagine you are on the City Council. Then go back and take his column apart sentence by sentence and see if you can find any facts that would help you make a reasoned decision about how to right the upside down financial ship that is Costa Mesa.

Has he given you--as a Councilperson--any facts upon which you can act to fulfill your fiduciary responsibility to the citizens of Costa Mesa?

All you'll find from West are sentences about people standing in the rain and similar things, along with a thinly veiled attempt to ramp up hatred against those who are trying to get Costa Mesa back to where the City is fixing roads and parks and the other things we expect, and not just being an ATM constantly being filled in the back by citizens and emptied in the front by employees.

Costa Mesa's government needs to be right sized. These are difficult times and emotional arguments help no one.

In a previous column, I wrote that any employees who are laid off should be given the opportunity to work for firms that are selected to provide services for the city.

It sounds as though Mr. Mensinger also wants to have that happen.

THE OUT OF TOWN THUGS ARE COMING AND THEY WANT TO TAKE OVER COSTA MESA!

At the present time, these astro-turf zombies are conducting phone "surveys" trying to find something negative about our four good Council members that redounds with the voters of Costa Mesa.

Right now, they're focusing on cross-dressing  Irish Gary Monahan wearing a dress kilt on St. Patrick's Day.

But, as soon as they realize that's not working, they'll try something else.

They're also looking for local brainless zombies who will act as fronts for them.

How do you fight this well funded gang from taking over Costa Mesa and forcing you to take second and third jobs to pay for a bloated City workforce?

The same way you did in elections in Costa Mesa since 2000.

ASTRO-TURF GROUP PRETENDING IT'S A COSTA MESA BASED ORGANIZATION TRYING TO CAPTURE NAMES AND ADDRESSES OF COSTA MESA CITIZENS

We got a whiff of the latest phony lefty "Costa Mesa group" that is trying to get citizens of Costa Mesa to send them their names and addresses to apparently try a misguided recall attempt of the four good Councilmen.

So far, the "group" is completely anonymous. It has no names of those behind it or even an address. You'd have to be very stupid to send them your name and other information without knowing a thing about who they are.

This is probably the same out of  town group that has been making phone calls to citizens of Costa Mesa.

Apparently, these out of town folks think citizens of Costa Mesa are outraged because our part time Mayor, Gary Monahan, considered working to support his family and employees on St. Patrick's Day--the busiest day of the year for an Irish Pub--to be important.

ANOTHER CITY EMPLOYEE CONTINUES THE MISINFORMATION

Here's a post that is now appearing in the Daily Pilot from a presumed City employee using the name wallywallace.

wallywallace at 8:24 AM March 28, 2011

Where are all the Council spokes-holes? I will speak for Husker 2112, North side phil and Martin Millard (insert his many screen names here) for this one. "We can't just kick the can down the street", "unfunded liability" insert some made up numbers here and Blah Blah Blah.

Actually, wally, I never post comments after articles, columns or stories in the Daily Pilot.  And, the Daily Pilot can confirm this to you.  If I ever did so, I'd use my real name.

The only time you will see anything from me in the Pilot will be in signed columns (sometimes the Pilot turns signed columns into signed letters).  And, you'll see my name displayed in the Pilot as 'M. H. Millard," not "Martin Millard."

Are you using a City owned computer, wally?  Are you posting from a City owned facility?

Say wally, be sure to use the CM PRESS comment section if you want to claim that you aren't a City employee.

You see, wally, arrogant comments like yours aren't helping your case at all.  They're just making all City employees look bad and are causing many citizens of Costa Mesa to lose sympathy with City employees.

Violent crime isn't an equal opportunity employer.  Had this cop been more clued into this fact and thus been more wary, he might still be alive, his wife would still have a husband and his kids would still have their father.

SOME CITY EMPLOYEES HURTING ALL CITY EMPLOYEES

Can it be that Costa Mesa has a few employees who are so dumb or so arrogant as to think that they can threaten, insult and try to intimidate the present City Council into backing down and stop working to right our financial ship?

Yes, apparently it can be.  Just read some of  the anonymous comments over at the Daily Pilot written by some people who are obviously City employees including cops.

The only thing that these employees are accomplishing is to piss off a lot of ordinary citizens of Costa Mesa (as well as Council members, we bet) and harden their hearts.

Remember how the nasty campaign against Jim Righeimer waged by some out of town cops backfired?

We think the same thing is happening now.

But now, the backfire is with a capital B.

Remember that large A Frame sign (pictured) that a couple of  out of town cops pulled around Costa Mesa behind a Cadillac Escalade?

All it did was anger voters and firm up Righeimer's support.

PART OF THE REASON WHY LEFTIES ARE ALWAYS SURPRISED BY POLITICAL THINGS THAT HAPPEN IN COSTA MESA

One of the biggest stories to happen in Costa Mesa in recent months was the meeting last night of the Costa Mesa Taxpayers Association.

However, as of this writing, there hasn't been a single word about the meeting in the Daily Pilot.

As you know, the CM PRESS wrote about it days before it happened and we urged folks to attend.

But, you lefties reading this say, "Millard that wasn't news.  Why, it was just some people getting together to complain about taxes.  Hey, we hear that kind of stuff all the time from righties. The real big news was covered by that other blogger, the lefty guy with the mystery stuff under his shirt. You know, the whiny, chicken little guy.  Why, he used big superlatives to describe this and that, and he wrote (as usual) about how horrible he thinks the new City Council is and how Costa Mesa is  going to fall off the edge of this flat planet (just as it was supposed to do by closing down the illegal alien job center). And, he did pass on a last minute tip about the Costa Mesa Tax Association (probably after he read about it in the CM PRESS), and he also passed on that tip to the usual lefty blogs and they all linked to his site as a hat tip because he's so tuned in.

"And, hey, Millard, the Daily Pilot did run a big story about three liberals who called a press conference in front of City Hall.  Now, that's front page stuff."

Well, lefties, you're wrong. Again.  If you weren't so busy licking the boots of other lefties, you might have a sense of what's really going on around you. And, you'd be able to pick the fly specks out of the pepper.  As it is, though, you have no proper perspective.  You can't tell what is important locally and what isn't. Fly specks and pepper all look the same to you.

The CM PRESS has been right about politics in Costa Mesa since 1999 when we first started publishing.

Have you forgotten how Chris Steel got elected in 2000, and how the lefties thought we must have stuffed the ballot box or something because no one thought he could get elected?  In fact, as you may recall, with our help, and the help of the Improvers, Steel came in Number 1 in that election, and that was after he had lost nine times before.

Well, we could go on, but we do want to see you lefties remain in your perpetual fog.  And, we'll continue to remain several moves ahead of you.

Keep reading that guy's blog for what you think is going on.  Then, get ready to slap your forehead (again) and say: "We didn't see that coming. What the...how did that happen?"

Oh, get ready to slap your forehead again.  Something is about to happen.

You see, a weather man isn't very good if he can't distinguish between the clouds with rain in them from the ones that are dry.

COSTA MESA INVESTIGATES CALL CENTER
Link to Daily Pilot story.

We think there's more to this than revealed in the Daily Pilot.

In fact, in February we were working on some leads and requested the SOP from the Call Center.

After getting a runaround, and being busy with other things, we put our request on a back burner with the thought that we'd come back to it after we finished the other things we were working on.

Now, it appears we won't have to do anything but read about something that we suspected. Then again, maybe it's something else that we didn't suspect.

Let's just say that where there's smoke, there is often fire. Follow the former and you may get to the latter.

YOU'RE INVITED--IMPORTANT MEETING TONIGHT

The Costa Mesa Taxpayers Association inaugural meeting kicks off today, Thursday, March 24th, at 6:30 p.m. at Skosh Monahan's.

There'll be free appetizers and plenty of great socializing as this important group is launched in Costa Mesa.

The organizers say it's all free and they want you and your family to join them.

The group's website: http://www.cmtax.org/.

The CM PRESS likes where we think this group may be headed.

First, it's a local group and seems to want to focus on local issues.  This means, we think, that it may not have people attracted to it who will waste our time telling us that we don't have to pay taxes or that we need to fill our closets with gold coins and how this or that group hiding in basements is controlling our money.

Second, we think it may have the potential to help get Costa Mesa's municipal government on the right track, not only as far as spending goes, but in other ways as well.

Third, we think it may help with the improvement of Costa Mesa.

Fourth, the City Council election of 2012 is well underway in Costa Mesa, and potential candidates may emerge from this group to either show they have the right stuff or show that they don't.

ALL THE CHICKEN LITTLES (MANY WITH THEIR HANDS IN YOUR POCKET) ARE SQUAWKING ABOUT THE END OF EXISTENCE AS WE KNOW IT

As the first business-like City Council of Costa Mesa keeps moving forward to cut the waste out of  bloated local government, we keep hearing the usual cliches about how they're going too fast or that they're going to leave citizens without services.  This is nonsense.

In the first place, the Council has to move fast.  The ship is sinking.

Many prior Council members failed to act and just grinned, scratched their butts and kept increasing staff levels and pay and benefits in order to get election support from the out of town employee unions. Right now, we only have one Council member like that: Windy Leece. If she prevails, Costa Mesa will probably declare bankruptcy because it won't be able to pay its debts or it will be forced to raise taxes and fees to pay employees who make more--often, much more--than the citizens who are paying them.

Imagine, if you will, that you have a maid and butler in your home, and that they make more money than you do. Then, when you decide to cut back, they whine that you simply have to take a second job to keep paying them because they're entitled for some reason to have life time employment with you.

We can't tell you how many meetings we've attended over the years where we've gone to the podium and told the Council that they were wasting our money on this or that specific item or function.  Our comments fell on deaf ears.

In the second place, the Council has its hands largely tied by bad contracts with employee unions so there is very little latitude in what they can do to save money.

In the third place, and we think this may be the most important point, it is much easier to hire people than to lay them off (bad union contracts again).  This means if Costa Mesa does lay off many people and then finds that outsourcing isn't working for certain functions, it can easily take back those functions and hire people on the city payroll.  And, we bet the line to fill such jobs, if this happens, will be a mile long.

And, on this third point, this is the main reason why the CM PRESS, has emphasized that the Council should not enter into long contracts for outsourced services.  We want to be able to end those contracts if we need to do so.  The other reason we have suggested that we should only have short term contracts is because it keeps those firms we contract with on their toes.  They know if they screw up, they'll be gone in the blink of an eye.

HELICOPTER DINGBAT AT IT AGAIN
Link
Lefty Barbara Venezia, who seems to want to channel Lucille Ball, and who may have found Luci's old bottle of red hair dye to help with the job, is at it again.

In her latest smarmy column [HERE] Venezia tells her few readers that she met with Costa Mesa's new PR flak Bill Lobdell, blah, blah, blah.

Then, near the end of her column, she writes that Mayor Gary Monahan may have to resign to improve Costa Mesa's public image.

What a load of crap.

Monahan absolutely should not resign.  He did nothing wrong. Our image is fine (except with lefties).

But, here's what really bothers us about  the trial balloon floated by Venezia about Monahan resigning:  It came after her meeting with Lobdell.

One has to wonder if Lobdell planted that thought with Venezia.  If so, he's not the right guy to be doing PR for the City.

You have lots of  'splainin to do, Lobdell.

[NOTE: The woman in the photo is Lucille Ball, not Barbara Venezia. Lucille Ball only pretended to be a dingbat.]

Remember, the national headlines on this story gave the impression that this was a group of errant college kids on spring break having fun (Think, Beach Blanket Bingo).  It was nothing of the sort. It was actually another glimpse at how far America has already fallen as it devolves to Third World status.

WHAT A WASTE OF OUR MONEY

WEDNESDAY, March 23, 7:00 PM--I just came from the no-Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting at City Hall.

There were 5 Commissioners, 6 staff members in the chambers, and 1 staff member in the TV control room. That's 12 people being paid to be there for almost no reason.

Oh, the public was well represented.  There was exactly one person from the public there.  That's right, just one.  That one person was me.  I was the only non-paid person there.

I've called before to do away with this Commission and have the no-Planning Commission take the extra half hour or so to do what this Commission does.

Why isn't the City Council taking my suggestion?

There are two reasons.

First, these are patronage seats.  To pay back donors and supporters, elected City Council members put some of them on this Commission.

Second, this Commission (just as with the no-Planning Commission) acts as the farm team for those who may want to run for office in a couple of years, and the City Council puts people on the Commission who they feel share their politics and world view and who might be good on the Council.

So, yes, we understand the reasons.  It's still a waste of money.

[Note: We wanted readers to see the above, so we changed our previously stated plan to put the Costa Taxpayers Association notice first on this page.]

SOMETIMES TRANSPARENCY NEEDS A LITTLE NUDGE

We noticed that Bill Lobdell seems to have added a line to his published column about becoming Costa Mesa's PR flak that now tells readers how much dough he's going to make.

As we say in the biz:

The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.
Unless,er, it writ what it wrote on the Internet.
Or maybe on the back wall of Mr. Jones' barn.

Anyway, if you missed the newly inserted toss away line buried (an old PR trick) down near the end of the column, Lobdell just affirms what we wrote before (in fact, we think we broke the story). He'll be making
$ 75 clams an hour with a cap of 40 hours per week. [Counting toes now] This adds up to $ 3,000 simoleons per week.

That ain't chump change in this down economy. Why, we've heard that many people are even getting pink slips.

MY OWN PR STORY

Speaking of burying things where they may not be seen (as I just did speaketh, above), here's a little more about what being a PR flak entails.

Back when I was acting in New York, one of my jobs to pay the rent was in PR/sales with a major steam ship line. [Hey, not all actors are waiters, you know. And, a seventh floor walk-up may be relatively cheap, but you still have to pay the rent.]

Other than wining and dining travel agents aboard our ships, my job mostly involved writing letters and other material to be sent to travel agents to spur them on to help fill the firm's three ships for Caribbean cruises and to convince them that booking their clients on our ships was a better choice than booking them on the ships of our many competitors.

In other words, I had to spin the positives and bury the negatives better than the guys doing my job in the other steam ship lines.

Anyway, down the hall from my office was a PR firm whose major client was a European airline.

I got friendly with some of the people in that PR firm.  Their proudest moments were when they were able to kill stories or get them buried in the back of newspapers when airplane parts (like engines) fell off their planes. Assorted falling parts apparently happened with enough regularity that these guys stayed pretty busy.

Say, back on ships. Have you ever read about all the people who get sick on ships while on Caribbean cruises?  You know you have, but you probably ignore them. Nothing seems to jump out to alarm you.

In fact, most of these sick passenger stories seem to get buried, and if you do read them, doesn't it seem that the finger is often pointed toward some sort of "flu" outbreak or maybe it points in the direction of the passengers having ingested some bad food or water ashore in some exotic port?

[Pssst.  I have ten words that you may never see in one of those sick passenger stories:  Drinking water tanks aboard the ships are difficult to clean.]
