No doubt before these arrests, there were the usual uniform groupies saying these were the best cops and how San Bernardino was so lucky to have the best cops.

SOME DO-NOTHINGS SHIFT THEIR TACTICS

It seems some of the do-nothings and know-nothings have changed their tactics in their attempts to have the City Council stop right sizing government.

Instead of posting threats and calling names, some of these folks are now showing up with new screen names in the Daily Pilot and they're trying to position themselves as the calm voices of reason.

It's as though they're saying and writing:

"Yes, we know the building is on fire and is about to burn down with us inside, but let's not jump the gun or rush things. Let's be sure we do this the right way. Let's take time.  Let's have meetings with everyone involved and discuss what to do. And, why aren't we consulting the fire department?"

Meanwhile, a few doers are correctly saying "Screw this, we're going to put the damn fire out and we're going to do it right now."

We saw this same shift in tactics from the do-nothings and know-nothings back when we were trying to get rid of the illegal alien job center.

DEVELOPERS AND THE RISKS THEY HAVE TO TAKE TO DEVELOP
Link to a column about a H.B. City Councilman.

Some people see real estate developers as evil.  This is unfortunate.

The above linked article gives a good overview of the development process and the thinking of developers.

It is real estate developers who risk much to build homes,  industrial buildings, office buildings and shopping centers.  No, they don't deserve fawning praise. It's their job. They make good money when things go right, but they have a lot of stress along the way. And, if things go wrong, they often go broke. Sometimes they go broke many times.

Still, who do you think built the house or apartment you're living in right now in Costa Mesa?  It was developers.

This reminds me of something.  The next time you go to Beverly Hills, look around.  Who do you think built those homes that are now selling for millions of dollars?  Do you think they just sprang up out of nothing?

Beverly Hills was developed by a couple of developers from Massachusetts who named their development after Beverly, a small community about 20 miles north of Boston.

In developers and others who risk much--oil wildcatters, those who not only start businesses, but who make them grow; the 'doers' of our society-- I see a personality type that is different from those who prefer not to take such risks.

The doers  are often criticized by the non-doers.  It's very easy to sit back and do nothing and smugly criticize those who do things.  After all, if you do nothing, you never fail, and you can snicker at the doers whenever they do stumble.

Which brings me to the present Costa Mesa City Council and the people who are smugly criticizing the Council for finally trying to get our financial house in order.

Well, you can fill in the rest yourself....

CHAUVINISTS IN COSTA MESA

Have you ever heard kids at a school claiming that their school is the best school?  You'll hear that at almost every school in every city.  However, they can't all be the best.  And, how do you determine best?  Best at what?  Sometimes, when you look at the school academic scores, you'll see that many of these "best" schools have very low scores.

Of course, no one wants to be a stick in the mud and tamp down the enthusiasm of young students.  After all, one hopes that positive thinking may actually help them improve.

I bring this up because as the Costa Mesa City Council starts right sizing City government, we are seeing comments from some in the city that sound much like that "be true to your school" attitude.

We're seeing and hearing some say that we have the best police department, the best fire department, the best employees, the best this and the best that and that if the City outsources, that we're going to get the bottom of the barrel and that citizens of Costa Mesa will be in danger or will have a lower quality of life.

This is nonsense.

But what's really going on psychologically is that some people are caught up in irrational chauvinism.

As you probably know, chauvinism is the belief--not based on objective facts--that your sex, your school, your city, your police department, your employees, etc. are better than any others.

But, maybe you think we're wrong and that Costa Mesa really does have the best police department, etc.  If so, tell us exactly why our police department, our fire department our employees are the "best."

And, while you're at it, you might tell us why people in just about every other city will say the same things about their police departments, their fire departments and their employees.

I followed the link and saw the column on salaries. Where do I apply for that messenger job? As usual, Geoff West chimed in with personal attacks and no solutions.

  4. What is with that Geoff West guy, anyway? He makes personal attacks instead of addressing specifics on issues and he seems like a really angry person.

  5. Geoff West is Costa Mesa's certifiable nut case. He just can't seem to get over himself. He claims to be a Republican but walks and talks like a Democrat.

I notice Geoff tends to attract unstable kinds of personalities to his blog site. And, as someone else observed recently, he's never met a cop whose leg he didn't want to shimmy up (or words to that effect).
