CM PRESS # 562

[UPDATE] The Daily Pilot now has a story about the shooting HERE.

Note: The information in the above Daily Pilot story about the shooting being near Paularino School is incorrect.  The vehicle was actually in the parking lot of Paularino School at the western most exit as shown in our photo when the shooting occurred.

We wonder why the CMPD is not releasing the victim's name.  And, we also wonder if the victim is an illegal alien.

[UPDATE] Shooting last night may have been a domestic issue. We just received a report, that we can't confirm, that it may have involved a man and his girlfriend. Both the girlfriend and boyfriend are telling different  and changing stories.  Interim Police Chief Kies sees this as not a threat issue for the community and isolated. No more info is available.

[See CM PRESS # 561 for additional  as it happened info.]

9: 25 AM--Sunday, July 17, 2011--The vehicle has been removed from the shooting scene.

Still no reports on this shooting in any of the main stream newspapers.  We even sent the info and our photo to the Daily Pilot last night.

All that is left at the scene are four pink paint marks put on the pavement by the CMPD to indicate where the vehicle was when the shooting occured, some broken glass from the vehicle's two broken windows and some yellow police tape.

We couldn't see any  CMPD marks on the pavement indicating where shell casings may have fallen and this just reinforces our view that the gun used was a revolver and from the sound, a .38.

It also appears that the shooter approached the vehicle from the passenger side as we couldn't find any bullet holes in the large blue sign hanging on the chain link fence immediately opposite the vehicle which most likely would be there had the shooter shot from the driver's side (see photo above).

Incidentlely, there has been large gang graffiti on the sidewalk opposite this shooting site for at least two weeks.

As is our policy, the CM PRESS, which has been aware of this gang graffiti, did not report it to the city. The reason we don't report graffiti is for two reasons: 1. The city rushes out and covers it up and neighbors then get a false sense of security or think the CM PRESS is overstating the problem with gangs since the neighbors don't get to see the graffiti.
2. The CMPD stiffed a person  from Mesa North who reported graffiti and asked for the reward.

  1. Mr. Millard, the reason that tags get painted over so quickly, and the reason there is a hotline, is that tagging is contagious. Taggers often try to outdo each other on the same surface but will not go back to a place where they know their tags will not be visible to others. To them, tagging that surface is a waste of time. Covering them up quickly has had proven results in reducing graffiti.

  2. To FYI: Graffiti is a symptom.

When the city covers it up before citizens get to see it, citizens remain in the dark about the problem of gangs in the neighborhood. And, they may also be off their guard and inadvertently put themselves in danger.

The CM PRESS wants citizens to see what we see. We will not report graffiti to the city, but we will let other citizens know where it is so they can have their consciousness raised.

Maybe if enough citizens see what we see, we won't be the only one at City Council meetings complaining that the Council still doesn't have its priorities right and wants to plant trees instead of removing slums.

  3. My neighbor got tagged across her entire garage door on the Westside only once. She didn't immediately report the graffitti to CMPD. Instead, she quickly sprayed ..."SON JOTOS!!!!" (...ARE QUEERS!!!!) to the existing tagging.

She left it up for a few days for the losers to see their names in full view for the entire neighborhood to laugh at THEM! I'm sure their rival tagging crew, other rival gang members got a good laugh too! But more importantly, their fellow tagging crew/gang members, and all the long-time homeowners got her message loud and clear!

The graffitti has never since re-appeared on any of our small tract of homes. I guess "machisimo" is sacred to these thugs, because how can you tag-brag when you got so "dissed" by sweet lil' old "Abuela" (Grandma)!!!

  4. Regardless of how this gentleman was shot, may he have a speedy recovery and may God watch over him and his family at this tragic time.
    Mr.Millard,
I'm shocked at your reference to the apartment community in your neighborhood as a "slum",you must not get out of Orange County often, much less ever visit a 3rd world country, where true slums exist.
Maybe you would be happier in a gated community in Irvine.Just a thought....

  5. To Anonymous 2:46: Be shocked. It is a slum.

And,FYI so you don't make such stupid comments again (as you have in the past): A slum doesn't have to be the worst slum in the world to still be a slum. These are functionally obsolete, slab-sided, cheaply constructed tri-plexes that are too dense. They are slums and can never again attract upwardly mobile people.

And, as far as me not getting out. I've lived in Boston, New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and many other places and have lived in or been to Cuba, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Mexico and many other places and I've seen their slums.

  6. I believe the CM Press referred to this apartment community as a "slum" - in comparison with the rest of the neighborhood. In which I would agree. Same with the apartments on Baker St. - another crime haven.

During my brief get-together with neighbors at the crime scene, I was shocked to hear of the plethora of crime directly linked to this apartment community - that I had no idea about. Let's peel the onion back. Who owns these apartments? Typically lower rents = lower income renters = crime.

My view is that the Landlord(s) and their "apartment rental business" they are operating is a serious threat that may potentially cause physical or financial harm to others in the community. Can we petition the City to pull the Landlord(s) business license? How about The People of Mesa North vs. Landlord(s)?

Great job CM Press on your fine reporting. I hope you will investigate and expose these Landlord(s).

  7. I sure wish the city would buy up the slums on El Camino in Mesa Del Mar.
