CM PRESS # 322

HERE'S THE OC REGISTER'S STORY ON CHIEF SHAWKEY AND CAPTAIN SMITH BEING PUT ON LEAVE
Link
The Register is pretty good at getting information on why something has happened, and the paper says it'll update the above linked column later today.  The CM PRESS has heard rumours of what's going on, but we can't confirm them, so we're not going to report anything until such time as we do receive confirmation.

MARINES TAKING THEIR M1A1 ABRAMS MAIN BATTLE TANKS TO AFGHANISTAN
Link

The Marines usually use their tanks in a different manner than the Army.

The Army will often use its tanks almost as a stand alone mobile artillery and will  often mass large numbers of tanks.

The Marines, by contrast, will usually attach a platoon of tanks (5 tanks) to a Marine infantry unit along with  attack helicopters, and sometimes a few jets.  Then, the whole battle group moves forward as a unit, usually very fast, to take a town. The jets go first, usually flying at tree top height strafing and bombing, immediately followed by the attack helicopters and then come the tanks and the Marine infantry.

Because tanks are very vulnerable to shoulder fired rockets, the relationship between the tanks and the grunts is a close one with each protecting the other.

MCEVOY WANTS TO BE APPOINTED TO THE CITY COUNCIL
Link to DAILY PILOT article.

In the above linked article, Chris McEvoy tells the Daily Pilot that he should be appointed to the City Council to fill Katrina Foley's seat because he came in third in the recent election.

Sorry, almost doesn't count in elections.

Also, as anyone who follows these things knows, McEvoy only got as many votes as he got because he was a pawn of the two city employee unions (representing employees who mostly don't even live in Costa Mesa) that were trying to stop Jim Righeimer from winning.

In addition, McEvoy is on the record as opposing the Westside overlay that Improvers had worked so hard to get implemented to help lift the Westside out of being the worst part of Costa Mesa.

So, who would the Improvers like to see appointed to the City Council?

Two names pop up the most:

Colin McCarthy and Steve Mensinger.

Both McCarthy and Mensinger have been on the Planning Commission for a couple of years and the folks have had a chance to see how they operate and how they vote on issues that are important for the improvement of Costa Mesa.

Both McCarthy and Mensinger pass muster with most Improvers and either one might be expected to help improve the Westside and the rest of Costa Mesa.

Both are homeowners.  Both are married and have children. Both are intelligent. Both want to make Costa Mesa a nicer place. Both were active in the community before they were appointed to the Planning Commission. Both seem even tempered, likable, polite and soft spoken.

McCarthy has cut his teeth as the head of a neighborhood association.  He's a lawyer and considers the legal implications of various issues that come before the Planning Commission.  He's methodical, detail oriented, and likes to have all his ducks in a row before deciding on issues.  He's not a Ready, Fire, Aim type of individual. He'll vote against something that he thinks is good, if he sees a legal problem with the way the spade work has been done before the issue comes to Planning.

Mensinger is a businessman who is extremely active in boosting sports and other activities at Estancia High School.  He seems to get along well with everyone. In fact, even Katrina Foley praised him recently from the dais when she gushed and beamed (yes, those are the right words) that Costa Mesa should have an economic development committee and that Mensinger should be the head of it.

  1. Hi CM Press. I watched in horror the latest City Council video and I have a question for you. Do you know if Katrina Foley is leaving the CC for her new school gig? Looks like she is on the fence. Any thoughts?

    Thanks

  2. To Anonymous 2:05:00--She says she's taking the seat at the School Board. She may actually be pretty good over there (knock on wood); especially for the Costa Mesa High School side of the city.

  3. It is a simple equation: the two 'leaves' are for dead weight that don't even bother showing up for work. Roeder has to cut the fat, and these were obvious to many stakeholders. I think the citizens innately get these (hopeful) cuts, given the stated facts. These are neo-bureaucrats that signed up to take costa mesa money and spend it in arizona. be gone with them!

  4. What are mcevoys reasons for opposing the overlay zone?
