HOMELESS INCREASING IN SOUTHWEST PART OF COSTA MESA

At today's joint Parks and Recreation Commission and Planning Commission meeting, the hot item was the problems being caused by a growing number of homeless people in and around Lion's Park.

Now, why do you suppose homeless people are congregating in that area?  It's simple.  There are many charity services in that area.  By hanging around there, they can get free food, free clothes, free medical and dental care and much more. They can also turn in cans and bottles at the local recycling center and then walk across the street and buy cheap booze.

Churches are coming to Costa Mesa to feed the homeless in the park. And, if the cuisine there isn't what the homeless people had in mind, they can simply walk up to the free Soup kitchen on 19th Street.

The CMPD supplied statistics to the meeting. In all of 2009 there were 129 incidents involving homeless in Lions Park.  From January-September 2010, that number had risen to 634 incidents.

Unfortunately, citizens in Costa Mesa have allowed a charity culture to grow in this city.  Charities are the business in this city. And, the City continues to fund the charities by giving them CDBG funds (our tax money).  The local newspaper continually publishes gushy articles about this or that charity.  Even the police department has officers partying and playing with the charities.

Folks, we've been writing about this for years.

If you want pigeons to leave an area of a park, just stop feeding them.  It works the same way with humans: stop feeding them, stop giving them freebies, stop making them feel welcome.

Meanwhile, it was also reported at today's meeting that the downtown library has had to hire a security guard to protect people using the library from the homeless people.  Overstuffed chairs have had to be replaced with wood ones because the former start smelling of urine and other smells of people who don't bathe too often.

The city is now considering hiring another security guard, this one to protect people using the Downtown Community Center adjacent to the library.

One Planning Commissioner and one Parks and Recreation Commissioner at the meeting said that they can no longer take their children to Lion's Park because of the problems.

Here's our precept: All living things gravitate to where they feel comfortable.   And, here's it's corollary: Remove the comfort and they'll leave under their own power.

ABOUT VAN TRAN

The other day, we spoke to some of our friends in the Vietnamese community in Little Saigon about Van Tran not being able to unseat Loretta Sanchez.

They weren't surprised at the result, and told us that in their opinion Van Tran was "cold" and didn't really mix with or help the Vietnamese community.  We don't know if these anecdotal comments accurately describe Van Tran, and his relationship to the whole community, but we thought we'd pass them on.

Also, as you know, Allan Mansoor has  been elected to Van Tran's old state assembly seat.

In both religions, the most devout women cover their hair. How will America handle this?  You can't tell one religion not to do something and then allow another one to do the same thing. U.S. laws don't allow the government to (sorry) split hairs that way.

DOES O.C. REALLY NEED 34 CITIES?
Link to OC Register article.

Long time readers of the CM PRESS will recall that we have advocated for Costa Mesa and Newport Beach to become one city called Newport Beach.  This would benefit citizens of both cities in many ways.

  1. Great subject matter today.

I've spent my entire life trying to figure out why Costa Mesa and Newport Beach are two separate cities. It's nothing more than another way to waste money. Double the fun, double the cost!

Likewise, the hypocrisy in play with regard to covering women's hair is insane, as are the participants of such nonsense. The entire concept is very foolish to start with.

  2. Oh, my. You mean there are actually organizations that are giving out food to people who would otherwise go hungry? How terrible. The charities are not the problem. What do you think the real problem is?
