POLLYANNA ALERT! POLLYANNA ALERT! PROCEED TO SHELTER UNTIL ALL CLEAR IS SOUNDED!

RETREAD JAY HUMPHREY SHOWS HE'S OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY AS HE GUSHES POLLYANNISH NONSENSE ABOUT COSTA MESA SCHOOLS

I took a look at Jay Humphrey's campaign Website and came across this:

"We [Humphrey and his wife] chose Costa Mesa because we liked what we saw:  a small town atmosphere with big city amenities, along with wonderful people, great schools and unbeatable weather." [Emphasis added]

Folks, I'm sorry to say this, but Costa Mesa does not have "great schools."

If Humphrey doesn't know this or if he's just giving us the usual Wendy Leece type of mindless happy face crap, he should not be getting the votes of improvement minded citizens. If you don't know something is broken, you're not going to be able to fix it, and our schools are broken and need fixing.

But let me clarify this because language such as "great schools," or "lousy schools," can be misleading in that such terms might cause some to think that the inanimate "schools" are the problem almost as though we live in a Disneyesque reality where inanimate objects have intelligence, personality and wills.  And, some may blame the teachers, the administrators or the district.

The truth about this and as I've written many times before is that a school is not considered great or lousy based on the physical facility, the teachers, the administrators or the district.  A school is rated based on the output of the students on standardized tests.  Every single one of Costa Mesa's schools has physical facilities, teachers, administrators who are equal to or better than the same things in the same district that we share with Newport Beach.

What is the difference?  Why are Newport's schools considered so much better than Costa Mesa's schools? And, why do upwardly mobile parents send their kids to schools in Newport Beach or even Huntington Beach instead of Costa Mesa schools?  The answer is simple:  THE STUDENTS.

And, the fact that Costa Mesa has so many students who don't do well on standardized testing is not a school district problem.  It is a city problem.  A city supplies the students.

So, what is the essential point I'm making, beyond the point that Humphrey is out of touch with reality?

It is this:  Costa Mesa needs to improve its demographics.  We need to attract more upwardly mobile people here and fewer illegal aliens and people who are downwardly mobile.  Sound too harsh for you?  Well, grow up!  People make a city.  Get people who want the best for themselves and their families and who get the education and work for it and have the traditional values of this country and you'll have great schools.

And, this is exactly what the Righeimer Council is doing to improve Costa Mesa by fixing our infrastructure and implementing the Westside Plans--this is making Costa Mesa a magnet for upwardly mobile people. As they come here, instead of going to Irvine and South County, these people will improve our demographics and eventually, the schools will be better.

Here's a song that seems appropriate.

  1. Maybe its not the students per se... but the PARENTS-- yes, a problem of demographics. Some demographics just dont expect excellence out of their children. For some parents the threshold for success is pretty darn low

The city thinks spending money on lit sports fields will attract young upwardly mobile families? NO!!! Good schools do-- what parent who cares about the success of their child would consider pop warner football more important than a solid k-12 when making a home buying decision? Much of the smart money moves to irvine and fountain valley for those reasons. A bit of a conundrum, but im sure high density housing will help address those issues :-/
