Study is called controversial because anything to do with racial differences is called controversial even though science is just science and we need to follow the facts no matter where they lead.

LA CROSSE: MAYFLIES HATCH IS SO HUGE IT SHOWS UP ON WEATHER RADAR
Photos and video.
Mayflies (depending on the species) only live as adults for a few hours to a few days. They do not have functioning mouth parts or digestive systems because they are not born as adults to feed, but for one reason only: to reproduce and make more like themselves. Just like all organisms in their own ways.
Nature screams out to every type of organism (including humans): MAKE MORE LIKE YOURSELF! EXPAND ALWAYS AND NEVER CONTRACT!

I SAY THE FOLLOWING ABOUT THE PROPOSED CHARTER FOR COSTA MESA:
1. Freedom is better than non-freedom.
2. Freedom means, in part, self-determination.
3. Self-determination means you make your own decisions.
4. Making your own decisions means you decide what is best for yourself.
5. In terms of government, government that is closest to you and which governs the fewest number of individuals is more likely to allow you to be part of the decision making process about what is best for yourself.
6. Such a government is thus better at enabling your self-determination.
7. Thus, your ability to practice more self-determination gives you more freedom.
8. We end up where we began: Freedom is better than non-freedom.
The charter is about freedom and local control which translates to self-determination for Costa Mesans.
Those who argue that we should continue to be ordered around and dictated to by politicians hundreds of miles away in Sacramento, including many politicians who have no clue about the conditions in Costa Mesa and who probably couldn't find our city even with a map, is to ignorantly repeat that we want to continue to be slaves.
Am I overstating this when I mention "slaves"? I don't think so. What I'm referring to is not chains or similar things, but the psychology that kept many slaves from wanting freedom. And, you do know that many slaves, not just in America but in other nations and throughout history, did want to remain as slaves. They were so conditioned to life as slaves, that they feared freedom and thought they couldn't manage or take care of themselves unless the slave master made all the decisions for them.
There is a similar phenomenon seen in prisons where some long time inmates are said to be "institutionalized." That is, they don't want to get out of prison and fear being on their own on the outside.
Don't we see this fear of freedom coming through some of the comments we see in the Daily Pilot about the proposed charter? When you look at some of the comments from the haters, you'll see them saying things such as "We don't need a charter." Here's what they're really saying: "We don't need freedom." Then some say, "We don't trust the council." Here's what they're really saying: "We don't trust ourselves to be able to take care of ourselves."
Some pro-charter folks refer to the charter as being similar to the U.S. Constitution. It is that, but it is more. It is also the Declaration of Independence in which we ensure that we--the people who actually live in Costa Mesa get to make some of the decisions that affect us and not some people who don't live here and who are not affected by decisions that they make.
You decide for yourself, but for me, I'll always take freedom, self-determination and local control over their opposites.
