CMPD UNVEILS AN ONLINE CRIME MAP
This is something that the CM PRESS has been calling for, and we're glad to see it happen.
However, our quick look at the map, and the list version of the incidents, shows that many things aren't mapped. For example, there's a report of a "Possible Dead Body," and another of an "Assault," and others of "Child Neglect," but there's no indication of where in the city these occurred.
Also, in order for this map to be a good tool both for law enforcement and for the city council, there should be a cumulative map showing all serious incidents over a several month period so high crime spots can be clearly seen. Our guess is that this may already be part of the plan, but we did want to mention it, just in case it isn't. UPDATE: You can modify the search criteria to show incidents within the past seven days, but it looks as though the map will only show 50 incidents at a time, so one still doesn't see full patterns of crime hotspots.
Also, we don't see anything on the map or the list indicating how the calls were cleared, and we think that should be included.
We also noted that some items have stars with them, but there is no key as to what the stars mean. UPDATE: Apparently the star means that the incident happened with the last four hours.
UPDATE: HERE'S another type of map that we would like to see for crime in Costa Mesa. This one is from Aljazeera and shows various diseases in Africa, but you get the idea.

ROBIN LEFFLER TRIES AGAIN
As we reported before (in CM PRESS # 282), Robin Leffler, who heads up a political group in the City, attended the last charter committee meeting and spoke at public comments to try to get the charter committee to not write a charter before they decide whether or not we should even have a charter.
And, at that meeting, she relied upon a few words spoken by Mayor Righeimer, in which the mayor, in a very offhanded way, mentioned that the committee would consider and write a charter.
After she had spoken at that charter committee meeting, one of the facilitators addressed Leffler's concerns and correctly told her that the Council [as a whole] had voted to have the committee write a charter and that her reliance on an offhanded comment by one Councilmember--the mayor--was misguided since the committee follows the directions of the Council, not just one Councilmember.
Well, at last night's City Council meeting, Leffler was at it again as she showed a short segment of video in which the mayor had made his offhanded comments.
And, Leffler was once again told that the Council had voted to have the committee actually write a charter and not first decide whether or not we should even have a charter. The decision on whether or not we should have a charter will be made by the voters.

SOMETHING SEEMS JUST A LITTLE LOOSEY GOOSEY IN CITY HALL
The CM PRESS has reported before that some (but not all) staff reports going to the City Council, on issues that the Council is being asked to vote on, seem loosey goosey.
Last night there was another example of this as the Council was asked to vote on putting special assessments on about a dozen real properties in the city that supposedly have not been brought into compliance with code enforcement citations.
Councilperson Wendy Leece said that prior to the Council meeting she had checked some of the files on the properties in question and found that the files indicated that some of the properties were in compliance, yet the report to the Council said they weren't.
Finally, after a heated discussion--that went nowhere--as to whether or not it was proper for Leece to look at the files and whether or not all the files should have been given to all the Councilmembers, a few of the properties were removed from the staff report and the Council voted to move forward with the special assessments.
We know there are some bright people on the Council, and we suspect that if the CM PRESS can sense a problem with some of the staff reports (we could give you other examples), that they can also see the same thing and perhaps they will suggest, via the CEO, ways for staff to tighten up some of these reports. After all, we don't want to have another case similar to the one in which a former city employee missed a very important deadline on the charter vote.

BERNIE GOETZ SAYS ZIMMERMAN PROSECUTION IS POLITICALLY MOTIVATED
You may recall that Goetz shot four Black punks who were trying to rob him on a subway in New York years ago and that he was then also politically prosecuted, while the four Black punks were puffed up as being innocent Blacks victimized by a White racist.
Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Are you waking up to reality yet?

ROAMING BANDS OF BLACKS ATTACK TOURISTS IN HOLLYWOOD
No mention of the race of the victims, but one victim shown in the video with the above story is White. Twelve of the attackers were arrested.
In the above story, the LA TIMES does give clues to the race of the attackers when it tells readers that two black men were mistakenly detained by police because they fit the descriptions of those in the roving bands and the Times also writes that the twelve attackers who the police were able to arrest were from South Central and Compton.
