CM PRESS # 296

THE CM PRESS'S QUICK POSITION ON A LOCAL MATTER:  NO MORE HIGH DENSITY IN COSTA MESA.  WE HAVE TOO MUCH ALREADY.

We're asking the Council and the Planning Commission to put a quick halt to all the high density projects that are starting to come into the pipeline.

The way to stop high density proposed projects fast is to stop granting variances and especially parking variances; but other variances also play a big part.

Just building new high density housing without removing old functionally obsolete high density housing only reduces the quality of life in Costa Mesa.

It's time to bring it to a screeching halt.

WATCHING THE CHARTER COMMITTEE IS LIKE WATCHING GRASS GROW

At the speed the Charter Committee is going, they should finish a charter by 2095.

At last night's meeting, the committee spent a half hour just talking about whether they should have a moment of silent expression at the start of the meetings.  Then, one of the attorneys for the committee gave an hour long presentation about the minutiae of public contracts.  Then there was a ten minute break. That's when we left.

Folks, this really isn't very complicated.  You take a bunch of charters from other cities, and you compare the clauses in those charters that have stood the test of time.  All the charters are going to have the same general sections and will cover the same ground.  You then pick and choose and cut and paste and make changes as you go.  Then you polish what you come up with and discuss it to fine tune it.

What you don't do is try to write a charter from scratch by listening to long lectures on various aspects of the law.  And, you don't waste time talking about religion or other things. Geez!

Your goal and your mission is to write a charter. Period.

We're also getting fed up with people who keep bringing up the City of Bell as a reason to not have a charter.

Look, folks, the problems in Bell weren't because of a charter.  Those problems were caused because Bell has a huge non-citizen population that tries to keep a low profile and not come to the attention of any authorities.  So, the residents of Bell don't ask questions of government or show up at meetings. They just let those in charge of municipal government do whatever they want.

An example of  similar resident "apathy" is found in Costa Mesa, but it doesn't usually  involve our city government (there are some exceptions)--we have plenty of citizens looking over the shoulders of the municipal government.

Our problem in Costa Mesa is that we see very few citizens even caring what  our Sanitary District,Water District or School District are doing.

If  a Bell situation arises  in Costa Mesa, it most likely will come from one or the other of these three mini-governments.

the sanitary, water, and school districts aren't going to be city of bells either. lighten up already. if you are right, the only suspect is the school district, not transparent, big budget, etc. San and water? totally transparent, small budget, audited a lot.
