CM PRESS # 482

DARWIN AND EVOLUTION

I was writing something earlier today (down below) about how it's a mistake to think in terms of "superior" and "inferior" when talking about living organisms. The terms really have no meaning.

I thought everybody knew this basic stuff, but after reading some comments, I'm not so sure that's the case.

There's probably no simpler way of explaining  the basics of evolution than to simply look at this drawing Darwin made in 1837 when he was studying the finches on the Galapagos Islands.

The drawing can really be applied to any organisms.  The circled number 1 is the organism that starts it all.  Then, its offspring begin branching off and becoming different as the forces of evolution work to engineer an organism that is suited to its environment.

With the finches, the standard model Number 1, had offspring and some of these offspring were scattered, for whatever reason--storms, high winds, floods or whatever--on various other of the Galapagos Islands far from where Number 1 was located, and they became isolated from the main breeding population.

Over the centuries, these offspring, that were isolated on the several different islands in the Galapagos chain, began to change in many ways, but mostly related to their beaks.  Some developed heavy strong beaks and lived on seeds.  Some developed slender long beaks that could get insects out of rotten plants.  And, so it went.

Now, which of the finch types is superior and which is inferior?

The question is silly.

The correct answer is that they're just different. It's the same way with all organisms including humans.

ESTANCIA HIGH SCHOOL'S OPEN HOUSE TONIGHT
Link

Estancia is having an open house tonight, Thursday, April 28, starting at 7 pm.

Just a reminder. If you attend, don't let any lefties goad you into rude behavior.

Lefties try that all the time.  And try to keep a good distance away from them so there is no doubt that you did not try to get physical with them.

Frankly, I wouldn't even shake hands with any of the lefties, lest they say you tried to break their hand.

Remember, the citizens of Costa Mesa are paying for these schools and these teachers. We have a right to know what's going on in the classrooms.

JOEL FLORES NOW GETS ATTACKED BY A WAD OF GUM
Link to the Liberal OC opinion piece by Kathy Findley.

We also get mentioned in the above linked opinion piece by Findley as Martin Millard.

Here's our reply to the usual lefty "racist" smear by Findley:

Ms. Findley,

That should be Martin H. Millard, or M. H. Millard or H. Millard, but not just Martin Millard.

You might also define "racism" for readers, before using the term, so everyone knows exactly what it is you mean.

Here's a definition that most might agree on: RACISM: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/racism

There are two elemental clauses in that definition and neither one fits me. My beliefs begin way upstream from "race," and when talking about life, I begin with DNA. So, maybe I'm a DNAist.

At any rate, while "racist" is a favorite term used by none too bright lefties to throw at others, words do have meanings and racist doesn't apply here.

But, perhaps you need more to understand. Here's what I do believe, and which I have written extensively about over the years:

DNA (which includes the genes found on the strands of DNA)  is the primary determinant of the traits and capacities of all living organisms.

DNA interacts with various environments and conditions and 'seeks' to evolve organisms that are best suited for all possible niches by changing the organisms. Yes, it's called evolution and natural selection.

And, I don't believe that racial (or genetic) differences produce an "inherent superiority" of any race or ethnicity. In fact, that's so far from the way I believe nature works that it's absurd anyone would think I believe that.

To be very clear. There are no superior or inferior organisms (including humans), there are just different types of organisms who have evolved in various ways due to the natural forces of evolution and the constant tinkering with life that happens as a natural result of the plasticity of DNA and its ability to change the organism it produces to survive in ever changing conditions.

One has to ask: Superior at what? No organism is superior across the board from other organisms. Just doesn't happen. That's because that's not how nature works.

Is a fish superior to a bird? Well, maybe in the ocean it is. But it's not superior in the sky.

Now, take this very broad fish/bird example and apply it to all living organisms with more subtle differences than we see between fish and birds and you get an idea of how nature works.

Nature, insofar as life is concerned,  is all about engineering some form of life that will survive no matter what happens. It accomplishes this by a never ending tinkering with life.

THE BUZZ ON UNION "AUDIT" OF CITY'S BOOKS

The union (OCEA) is apparently going to use Harvey M. Rose Associates to audit the City's books.

Here's what we think will happen: Harvey M. Rose Associates will do its work and then say that Costa Mesa has to raise more revenue by increasing fees on businesses.

The union will then use that as "proof" that Costa Mesa government doesn't have to be right sized and that there should be no outsourcing or layoffs.

Don't buy rosy projections about Costa Mesa not needing to right size government.

Support the four good City Councilmembers.  They're making the hard decisions that will turn Costa Mesa around.  So far, most of the decisions they've made are the right ones.

But, we'll keep watching.  And, if they start getting squishy or get on the wrong track, you can count on us to be among the first to turn our praise into scorn.

The CM PRESS doesn't have loyalty to persons.  We have loyalty to positions.

And, insofar as Costa Mesa is concerned, our position is this: Continual improvement for citizens.

This means a nicer and safer city. Higher property values. Higher rated schools. A better quality of life for citizens in a city where they feel comfortable and happy and where they can pursue their dreams.

ESTANCIA HIGH SCHOOL'S WEB SITE

Estancia is having an open house tonight, Thursday, April 28, starting at 7 pm.

Maybe some folks might want to go and talk to Joel Flores about his recent confrontation with City Councilman Mensinger and try to find out whether Flores' is spreading his lefty political/social views in the classroom.

Remember, the citizens of Costa Mesa are paying for these schools and these teachers. We have a right to know what's going on in the classrooms.

  1. Flores should be fired! He’s a trouble maker and takes political grudges too far. My kids will not be attending Estancia High school due to this man.

  2. Hi Martin,

This is getting out of control.

Could you please respond to this latest accusation in the Findly story blog section as you did about the racism for all your allies.

    Did you know...

Back in 2008 Secret Service paid a visit to
Martin Millard’s home after posts on New Nation News where he seemed to be trying to prod a young impressionable reader to “harm” then candidate Barack Obama. The man is dangerous and police should be investigating him. He believes Unions are part of the grand conspiracy by Jews to take over the world.

  3. TO ANONYMOUS 1:00:00--Never had any contact wth any Secret Service agents, ever.

Never tried to prod anyone into anything. New Nation News runs some of my columns, but I hever comment or interact with anyone. I just write my columns and they pick them up if they want and that's the end of it.

Never even wrote very much about Obama at all, that I can remember. Maybe a few minor things.

I don't believe that unions are part of any grand conspiracy by Jews or anyone else to take over the world.

I suspect that the person who wrote the above false statements may be one of the people on my Haters and Bigots list. If this is the same person, he or she has also posted in other places using my name and variations of it.
