Living on the southwest side of Costa Mesa has never completely been without its challenges. Approximately a half of a mile to the east is where the gang problem exists and it continues east until approximately Harbor. However, my immediate area felt safe. I used to see the Gang officers very actively involved in the previously mentioned areas. I am just curious if we will still be able to have a gang unit once the number of police officers drops dramatically?

As you can see, the commenter expresses concern for safety on the Westside.  His or her idea of how to maintain that safety and keep the gangs at bay is to have plenty of cops.

In fact, that's what Costa Mesa has been doing for years.  Instead of fixing the problem by removing the slums, it has simply hired more cops.

We have to say it again:  Drain the swamp and the alligators will leave all on their own.  Keep the swamp and you'll have to keep hiring more and more alligator cops.

In the long run, both in terms of money spent and in terms of making Costa Mesa a much nicer and safer city, the smart thing to do is fix the problem.  Get rid of the slums.

Another analogy comes to mind.  If you have smoke coming from the exhaust pipe of your car, you might think the smoke is the problem.  Actually, that's just a symptom.  The real problem is in the engine.  Fix the engine and the smoke stops.

In Costa Mesa, the gangs on the Westside are a symptom.  Fix the real problem by removing the slums (and doing some of the other things we've constantly suggested)  and you'll fix the problem.

The CM PRESS reported this on 4/27 in CM PRESS # 481, and  we even posted a copy of the fictitious business name statement from the PILOT.  

We were able to get the scoop on this after a sharp eyed reader sent us the fictitious business name clipping from the PILOT.

STILL NO INFO ON THE CREEP WHO THREATENED MAYOR MONAHAN

Hopefully, the cops will release a name and photo of the loon and who he's connected with. 

We have many questions.

Was he acting alone?  Was he connected up with some of the local haters and bigots?  Was he commenting in the Daily Pilot and OC Register by using one or more of the names from the CM PRESS's Haters and Bigots list?  Did he regularly check in with other blogs in the city?  Is he a union member?  Is he the guy we suspect and who we mentioned in our earlier report, or connected with this guy in any way? Did this guy throw the brick? Who are his friends?  Why, if he lives in Irvine, was he threatening the mayor of Costa Mesa?  What's the motivation? What's the nexus? Has he threatened others?

By not releasing any information, the police are actually impeding the investigation and may be endangering lives, by not letting the public offer additional tips and information based on their knowledge of the guy.

No info given about the creep yet.  We wonder if he's the guy who used to live here in Costa Mesa and who moved to Irvine and who has been known to fabricate smears, make threats and stalk people?

We'll try to stay on top of this story, but getting information from the CMPD is just about impossible.  They cover up just about everything and this has more than a few citizens upset. But, that's for a different column.
