HIGGS BOSON SIMPLIFIED

Years ago, physicists did all the calculations and discovered that nothing exists.

But, since we do exist and since there's a whole universe full of solar systems and stars and all kinds of existent stuff, including us, they figured the calculations must be wrong.

Enter Dr. Higgs who said that there must be something missing in the calculations.

It's this little subatomic particle, he said, that, ahem, we can call the Higgs boson, that is hidden away in matter and which gives mass to everything and makes matter and existence possible--thus the pop name for the Higgs boson: The God Particle.

The problem is that no one has ever been able to find the Higgs boson.

The thing about finding many subatomic particles is that you have to smash atoms together to find them.

When you smash atoms you don't end up with recognizable bits and pieces of the atoms you just smashed as you would if you smashed, say, two soda bottles together.

Instead, you end up with subatomic particles that are not just ever smaller chunks of the atoms you smashed, but are very different things that are hidden within the atoms. The harder you smash the atoms the more hidden and different stuff you find.

Up until now we haven't had an atom smasher powerful enough to really smash the atoms hard enough to prove or not prove if there's a Higgs boson in there or not.   The thinking is that the LHC, the largest machine on the planet, has the power to do the job.

Maybe there is a Higgs boson, or maybe there's something else that fixes the equation.

We may soon find out.

Over on the right, we have a link to the LHC where you can see what the machine is doing at any time.

When beams are present you'll  often see 3500 GeV on the top of the page on that site.  That's only about half power for the machine, and that's what they've been running it at for about a year.

At half power, it's still more powerful than any other atom smasher.

No word yet on whether Michael Schroeder or Scott Baugh will be bringing their case against a White GOP grandmother to the New Black Panthers so  they can picket her house.

Hey De Niro, you got any idea who stole my clock while we were doing that play together at Bastiano's in Greenwich Village? It sure as hell wasn't Jackie Curtis or Candy Darling. They weren't strong enough to break my door down.
