CITY COUNCIL TO DISCUSS WASTE FRANCHISE FEE AT NEXT STUDY SESSION

Folks, if you have the time and patience, please read the above linked report that the City Council will discuss this week. Of particular importance is the page showing the fees.

However, the more important discussion is the one that is not being held: Having the City Council take over the Costa Mesa Sanitary District to save us all some money.

Our guess is that many citizens aren't even aware of the fact that our trash isn't picked up by the Costa Mesa Sanitary District--they have no trash trucks. It's picked up by a private trash hauler--CR&R. You as a taxpayer are paying CR&R--it's in your property tax bill.

The Costa Mesa Sanitary District--with a staff, it's own building and five elected officials, all paid for by us--just gives a contract to CR&R.

Why are we paying for a Sanitary District when the City Council and Costa Mesa municipal government can easily handle our waste management needs just as it's done in many other cities?

HERE'S A SIMPLIFIED EXAMPLE OF THE WAY WE SEE IT

Let's put this in simple and different terms. Say you want to hire someone to mow your lawn. You could just hire the mower directly.

Suppose, however, the politicians wanted to make some money. They could start a Lawn Mowing District and make you go through the district to have your lawn mowed.

The District wouldn't actually mow any lawns and wouldn't own any lawn mowers. They'd just call the mower and have him mow your lawn. Of course, they would take a cut for doing this "service," for you.

And, naturally, they'd need a building in which to work, and they'd need a staff. They'd also have to have an elected board of five commissioners who would each get paid and have benefits that you have to pay for.
