A Few Mutant Bacteria Can Protect An Entire Colony

Although this article speaks of "altruism" among bacteria, this is not the case. There is apparently a survival advantage for the basic un-mutated genetic code of the bacteria to be carried by as many bacteria as possible and that's why the mutants protect the non-mutants; it's in the best interest of the basic genetic code. And, there must also be a survival advantage in not having the mutation spread to the whole colony.
