HOW ABOUT COSTA MESA CRIME MAPPING?
Link to LA TIMES article about crime mapping in LA.

For several months now, the CM PRESS has been trying to get a crime map of Costa Mesa from City Hall.

So far we haven't been able to get one. We're not even looking for anything very fancy, just an electronic and static version of a recent crime history pin map would probably do the trick.

The reason we want this is so we can show the City Council and citizens that most of Costa Mesa's crime comes from just a few discrete areas.

Once that is established, the Council may want to concentrate a little money and resources in improving those areas in meaningful ways.

We think the whole city will then see the benefits of such concentrated action.

We'll persevere and let you know if and when we ever do get such a map.

NOMINATION FOR MAYOR'S AWARD FROM THE CM PRESS

JIM RIGHEIMER

On Thursday, September 16, during rush hour, thousands of motorists passed through a potentially dangerous and misplaced DUI checkpoint that was backing heavy traffic on to a 405 off ramp at Harbor Blvd.

Of all the thousands of people who witnessed this dangerous situation, only Mr. Righeimer got involved to question the safety and wisdom of such a checkpoint at that time and place.

Mr. Righeimer's courageous action may not only have prevented serious, life-threatening automobile collisions at that time and place, but also, by getting involved and bringing this to the attention of top officials in the CMPD as well as to the public, Mr. Righeimer may have helped the CMPD reevaluate its internal procedures for the placing of such check points in the future.

JIM RIGHEIMER SHOULD GET THE MAYOR'S AWARD

Thousands of people passed through the CMPD's DUI checkpoint that was dangerously backing traffic up on a Harbor/405 offramp, but only one person out of all of them got involved.

This reminds us of the many stories we read about a person being killed--such as Kitty Genovese--while everyone just watched.

In psychology this is called the bystander effect or diffusion of responsibility effect.

Unlike all those thousands of people who saw the same thing that Righeimer saw, Righeimer actually got out of his car to try to help solve a problem.

We need many more people like Jim Righeimer in Costa Mesa, and we think Righeimer should be given the Mayor's Award for his service to the community.

Here again is the link to the sound recording of Righeimer politely asking the police about the checkpoint (LINK).

  1. Cheers to Righeimer! Let's all go to the candidates forum tonight to help support him, you know the cops will show up in full effect since their pension is on the line.

  2. Glad to see this whole nonsense winding down. The Costa Mesa police seem to think they report to no one. Thank you Righeimer!
