Folks, how many times do I have to say it--Costa Mesa is not an island out in the middle of the ocean.

Costa Mesans have a right to try to improve our city.  If we succeed and some slum areas and slum conditions are removed, no one is thrown into the ocean.  Anyone who feels Costa Mesa is too expensive can simply move a mile or two up the road to Santa Ana where rents are cheaper.

Letting Costa Mesa devolve into a new skid row doesn't help anyone in the long run.

And, isn't this ability to move around and to try to live where you can afford to live just a basic idea in society?

As I've also written before, suppose you want to live in the wealthiest part of Newport Beach but you can't afford it.  Should you just move there and demand that Newporters put in cheap housing for you and maybe some free food charities and also charities that will give you free medical and dental services and  bags of groceries and maybe even some cash to help you pay your utility bills?  And, maybe they should also give you some drug and alcohol counseling and mental health counseling.  Why should they do that?  You are not their responsibility.

The same principle applies to Costa Mesa.  But, at present, all of those freebies--those magnets that keep Costa Mesa down--do exist in Costa Mesa and most of those skid row benefits are found on the Westside where the pathological altruists (many from Newport Beach) come to prove to themselves and their neighbors that they are kind, compassionate and caring (even though they live in Newport Beach).  However, none of them seem to be asking that these charities open branches in Newport Beach in their neighborhoods. And, we bet dollars to donuts that if any charities tried to do that, that these kind, compassionate and caring people would be storming Newport city council meetings complaining about it.
