| Costa Mesa is not an island |
Over in the Daily Pilot and at various city meetings, you'll see and hear the usual crackpots saying that Costa Mesa needs to keep housing for the poor. And, what is unsaid is that this means we should not improve our neighborhoods. And, what is also usually unsaid is that, in our case in Costa Mesa, "poor" is almost always a synonym for illegal alien.
The thought that the poverty pimps and the pathological altruists want to have stick in your mind is one of guilt. They want you to feel that you are somehow evil and mean spirited because you're kicking people out of their homes. They want you to feel guilty for wanting to improve Costa Mesa. They want you to accept downscale conditions to show that you are kind, compassionate and saintly (just like the saintly poverty pimps and the pathological altruists).
Don't let them browbeat you with such false ideas.
Remember, Costa Mesa is not an island out in the middle of the ocean. Those who are displaced from slums are not pushed into the sea. We have land all around us. And, the land all around us is pretty much the same as the land that is in Costa Mesa and it's within walking distance. It has the same weather and all of the other same natural conditions. That's because our borders are just arbitrary lines on a map.
Take this thinking a step further and imagine that the present city of Santa Ana doesn't exist. Instead, imagine that the borders of Costa Mesa are extended to include all of what is now called Santa Ana. In your mind, simply erase the name Santa Ana and replace it with Costa Mesa, and also erase the line that shows the border between the two cities. That was easy, right? That's because the two cities are right next to each other. On this now corrected map, the neighborhoods in Santa Ana are now neighborhoods in Costa Mesa.
As you now stand back and look at the new Costa Mesa you realize something is odd. The land closest to the ocean in Costa Mesa is on the Westside and the Westside is the worst side--in fact, it's a lot like the slum areas up on that part of the map that used to be called Santa Ana.
You also realize that the reason the Westside is the worst side is because it is being artificially kept low by the slums and other downscale things and conditions (downscale things and conditions loved by the poverty pimps and the pathological altruists). So, you set out to make that area better. You'd like your family and your kids to live in a nicer, safer city and you think Costa Mesa can be improved to be that city and you realize that the Westside is the key to making the whole city nicer. You think the Westside should be allowed to rise to its highest possible level based on the fact that it is so close to the ocean. So, one of the things you do is get rid of some of the slums and replace them with higher end homes that will attract an upwardly mobile population. After all, it is people who make a city what it is.
Suddenly there's an outcry from the poverty pimps and the pathological altruists, who make it seem as though you want to throw families out onto the street and they'll have no place to live. "Oh, where will they live, where will they live? They're being thrown out of their homes. Horrors."
Actually, the people who find that their slums are being replaced can simply move to another low rent neighborhood, and this would be in that other section of Costa Mesa (where we have erased the word Santa Ana and the border).
And, that's exactly what they can do right now, even though, in reality, when they move to that piece of geography where homes are less expensive, it is within another city.
The only difference is a city name and an arbitrary border. No one is harmed by improving Costa Mesa. No one is thrown into the ocean. No one is left helpless and starving.
It is misplaced compassion to try to keep Costa Mesa downscale. Instead, let's all try to be the best we can be and let's all live where we can afford to live. Isn't that what responsible people do?
