WILL GENIS BE GOOD FOR IMPROVEMENT OR WILL SHE FALL IN LINE WITH THE IMPROVEMENT OBSTRUCTIONISTS SUCH AS LEECE?

It's hard to tell.  Genis is smart and she has some conservative streaks. We should know soon after she takes her seat on the dais whether she's completely gone lefty ala Leece.

We'll be closely watching and reporting.

POOR WENDY LEECE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THAT SHE'S PART OF THE PROBLEM WITH COSTA MESA AND NOT THE SOLUTION

HERE are some comments that Wendy made on her blog back in June of this year in which she calls for hiring more police officers instead of making our city nicer to attract and retain upwardly mobile people.

Wendy is like a person who is drilling holes in the bottom of a ship while calling for hiring more people to patch the holes that she herself is drilling.  And, sadly, she can drill holes so fast that we'll never be able to hire enough people to fill the holes.

The solution, of course, is to simply stop drilling holes and then you don't need to keep hiring people to patch the holes.

Perhaps the above is too abstruse--and, we're sure it is for Wendy--so let us explain a little, but indulge us, please, as we make larger points about world views before we zero in on the specifics of Costa Mesa.

--First, everything in the dynamic universe and in all of its parts, including right here on Earth, changes. Change is inevitable and is what happens when you have movement; and without movement there would be no existence at all.

--Second, people make a city what it is. A city is not static or frozen in time. It, like the universe itself, is dynamic and constantly changing.

--Third, people are free to move to any city where they want to live, and like all organisms, people try to move to where they are comfortable.

--Fourth, a city can make itself the type of place to attract certain types of residents. This is no different from how a bar attracts a certain type of patron. In the case of a bar, if you have a cowboy theme, you'll attract cowboys.  If you have an Irish theme, you'll attract another crowd. If you have a gay bar, you'll get a different crowd.

And, so it goes.  Remember, a city is going to automatically change (see the first point above) and automatically attract people even if the city doesn't intentionally try to make itself attractive to this or that type of citizen.  This being the case, why not manage the eternal changes and consciously make your city the place that will attract upwardly mobile people who will fill the schools with their high-performing  children; who will not be criminally inclined; who will take care of themselves and their neighborhood?

If you have such people, you don't need as many cops, because there's not as much crime.  It you don't have such people, you'll have to keep hiring more and more cops and you'll never have enough.

So, how do you fashion your city to attract such contributing citizens?  You start fixing up your city--you remove the broken windows, you work to attract top class businesses and colleges, you make the streets and parks attractive.  You set certain standards for the way the city should look and feel.

Okay, so back to Wendy.  Wendy praises the charities that are acting as magnets that are attracting and retaining downwardly mobile people--people who do need to be on the public dole or they couldn't afford to live here.

And among these people are many who are mentally ill or who break many laws.  Yes, it's sad, but the world is full of people who need help in one way or another.  Should we let Wendy and her friends bring them all here to Costa Mesa?  We don't think so.

So, as Wendy and her pals attract such people to Costa Mesa, (read drilling holes in the bottom of the ship) the crime goes up, and  then they call for hiring more police (read workers to patch the holes that Wendy and her pals are drilling all the time).

Stop drilling holes in the ship that is Costa Mesa Wendy.  There are many citizens in this ship with you who want a crime free and nicer city and they see that you're part of the problem.  Get your world view straightened out to reflect reality.
