IN CASE YOU MISSED THIS ABOUT COSTA MESA'S EMPLOYEES

In June of 2011, the CM PRESS used the public records act to request the zip codes of all Costa Mesa City employees.

Here's we were able to discover.

As of June 2011, Costa Mesa had 575 employees (including police and firefighters). Of those, 472 didn't live in Costa Mesa. Thus, 82% of our highly paid employees choose to live elsewhere.

And where is that elsewhere?  Well, a number live in Newport Beach and Huntington Beach and some live as far away as San Marcos, Idyllwild, Murrieta, Temecula, Oceanside, Valley Center.

What do you think?  Would the citizens of Costa Mesa be better served if  more of our employees actually lived here and were part of the community?

GARY MONAHAN AS A GOOD ARCHETYPE IF THE LOCAL GOP WANTS TO KEEP WINNING ELECTIONS

If you just beamed down to Costa Mesa from the space ship moon, and observed local politicians without studying their positions on issues, you'd think that Gary Monahan is a Democrat and maybe even a Democrat  such as Tip O'Neil.

Like O'Neil, Monahan has the common touch and has none of the country club airs and bloodless stiffness about him that so many Republicans seem to have.

Even though Monahan has been on the Council for years he still projects an ordinary guy image and is the sort of politician that ordinary folks feel comfortable being around and one who they wouldn't hesitate to discuss some relatively minor neighborhood or street problems with over a beer.

Now, this short column isn't intended as a paean to Gary, but rather as as an example of the kind of politician that people here in Costa Mesa and in the nation as a whole can relate to on a very human level.

Too many Republican suits don't seem to get it, but they might learn a thing or two just by watching Monahan and how he interacts with people.

In the current election, John Stephens is narrowing the gap with Monahan as votes continue to be counted.  At last look, Gary was only 190 votes out in front of Stephens.  If it should happen that Gary eventually loses the election, it will be a big loss for Costa Mesa.
