CM PRESS # 53

UPDATE ON WESTSIDE STABBING:  The CMPD says the two Hispanic victims are  brothers. The 18-year-old brother was taken to a hospital in Santa Ana with life threatening injuries, but is now listed in stable condition after an operation.  The 24-year-old brother was treated at Hoag for non-life threatening injuries and released.

The victims, who the CMPD says are not gang members, were approached by two Hispanic gang members and were attacked after being asked where they were from.

Readers may recall how the CMPD, just a few years ago, tried to pretend there were no gangs in Costa Mesa and then after they were forced to admit that there are gangs--seven gangs, in fact-- the department then tried to hide the fact that all seven gangs are Hispanic.

It actually seemed to upset some officials that there are no White supremacist gangs in Costa Mesa; but that didn't stop them from discussing White supremacist gangs in a report made to the then City Council and not even mentioning that the seven gangs that are here are Hispanic.  Think we're kidding?  Get a copy of the
"Gang Status and Gang Initiative" report presented at a City Council Study Session on March 13, 2007 (the date of the report was February 22, 2007) and read it for yourself.

TWO BROTHERS STABBED ON WESTSIDE

One in critical condition.

Will Costa Mesa now become Stabba Mesa?

No word on legal status.  Yes, dear readers, they were stabbed in one of the areas--edge of the Shalimar slum-- that needs to be thinned out and improved so it will attract upwardly mobile people.

Of course, this wasn't on Wendy Leece's "Westside" which has a fence/wall and gate all around it, so Wendy probably isn't too concerned about such incidents outside of her bubble.

What will Wendy probably do if she sees the above report?  Why, she'll more than likely call for hiring more police officers (who couldn't have stopped this) instead of trying to improve the Westside to remove slums that attract people who are inclined to such violence.

Folks, you can't hire enough cops to stop crime if you have slums.  You could hire a cop to stand on every slum street corner and the violent crimes would still happen.

The solution is to remove the slums.  They are habitats for a criminal element.  Remove their habitats and they'll voluntarily move to some more accommodating city where people don't care what happens in their city.

And, to those who whine that if we do that, we're just pushing the problem someplace else, we have to say, yes, that's right.  Its up to people in cities that attract criminals to act in their own best interests to avoid being magnets for them.  Costa Mesans can't take care of the whole world.  We need to take care of ourselves and we expect others to take care of themselves.

WILL SANDY GENIS BE A BIG SURPRISE?

Genis was backed by the unions and the lefties in the just past election, but  some staunch conservatives in Costa Mesa contacted us during the election when we were poking fun at Genis and insisted that she's really a conservative.

If Genis is really a conservative, why did the unions and the lefties back her?

Well, they may have assumed that she's a liberal because she takes strong environmental stands.

If you think about it, you'll realize that her opposition to what the majority on the Council was doing seemed to be mostly about environmental things, such as the proposed sale of the Fairgrounds, and less about their fiscal views.

Of course the labels liberal and conservative have lots of fuzzy edges, so one can be a so-called liberal on some issues and a so-called conservative on others.

It may also be that Genis is something of a small "l" libertarian as well.

One thing we're certain about is that Genis really wants an improved Costa Mesa--now, we'll just have to wait and see how she defines improvement.  Our guess is that she'll be against major developments that eat up our green space (if so, we agree with that position), but she may be on board for fixing our infrastructure.

Here's another clue about  Genis. When she was on the City Council years ago, she voted against Triangle Square when it was first proposed.  And, had the CM PRESS been on the Council, we would have voted the same way.  At least we would have voted against the way Triangle Square is designed, and we would have had surface parking  or an above ground parking structure, and a smaller building footprint.

Another thing about Genis is that she usually keeps her cards close to her chest, so we'll have to wait to see what cards she plays once she's on the dais to know if she'll be good for the physical improvement of the Westside and the City as a whole or whether she'll be an improvement obstructionist.

Improvement is about priorities and a vision for our City.  Wendy Leece and her pals see improvement as a matter of putting more money into hiring additional City employees and helping the charities prosper, while most Improvers see improvement as a matter of making our City a better physical place to attract and hold upwardly mobile citizens.

Where will Genis come down on these two different priorities and visions?

  1. I have heard it said more than once, informally and in the blogs that Genis may be OK. Time will tell. I only hope she drops the sarcasm and finds a new way to communicate. Her betrayal to CM will not be forgotten by this voter.
