RIGHEIMER INCREASES HIS LEAD WITH TODAY'S VOTE COUNT
The mayor is now 37 votes ahead of Humphrey.
Here's the tally as of 5 p.m., 11/12/14.

Given the number of votes cast and counted and a few other factors, there just can't be that many more votes to be counted for Costa Mesa. In fact, we think the counting may be over in the next day or so.
If Righeimer wins, improvement will continue with maybe some new moves--such as more focus on bringing national credit tenant retail operations into the Westside to serve the needs of the new upwardly mobile residents who are now understanding that the Westside is still the best value for the money in real estate in Costa Mesa.
If Humphrey wins, improvement will still continue because the ship of improvement has sailed and it takes a while to stop it or turn it. And, in two years we get to elect three more people to the city council.
Now, as far as the present election goes, Mayor Righeimer should not have had as tough a fight as we're seeing, and we chock that up, maybe, to him listening to the GOP suits instead of the Improvers who have been the ones behind the election of several of Mr.Righeimer's improvement minded predecessors.
Generally, the GOP suits are good for big county, state and national ideas and they're good at raising money and helping send out expensive mailers, but here in Costa Mesa, they're not very good at the ground game. A candidate has to understand this and work with it.
And, in this regard, we once again point to the election of 'unelectable' Chris Steel. Steel had run nine times before and had lost each time. Then, the Improvers contacted him and suggested that if he would run for the tenth time that they might be able to get him elected. So, Steel rushed around at the last minute and got signatures and filed the papers to run. And, not only did he win election, but he won easily.
Once on the dais, Steel started making bad decisions as he cozied up to the GOP suits and liberals, and he soon lost the support of the Improvers. In fact, they were even talking about a recall election but finally decided to let him serve out his term and then work to make sure he didn't get elected again.
