Our suggestion about the possibility of building an airport at Camp Pendleton to stop the growth of John Wayne appears in the Pilot today (Here). And now there's a new story about the millions of dollars being poured into John Wayne (Here).
Folks, take a drive around John Wayne. Where do you think future expansion will be?
Here's a clue. On the east (Newport and Irvine's side) are many multi-million dollar high rise buildings, while on the west (Costa Mesa's side) there are only low rise industrial buildings that can be taken over under eminent domain in an eye blink.
Also, on the north of the airport (facing Main Street) are more low rise industrial buildings that can also be taken over.
Our guess: Eventually (unless an alternate airport is opened), John Wayne may expand west into Costa Mesa and a new runway may be built whose apron will be on the present Red Hill Ave. We also guess that it may expand north.
Since planes take off into the wind, and since our winds come in from the ocean (except during Santa Ana wind conditions), we may have planes taking off from the new runway which will have them flying over an even larger chunk of Costa Mesa than is now the case.
And, why wouldn't the planes just keep taking off from the present runway and land on the new one?
Well, that might happen. However, landing planes would then be coming close to high rise buildings in South Coast Metro, and that might be too dangerous.
At any rate, the above are just our guesses about how things may develop over the next few years.
We hope we're wrong.
