Is the Human Body Nothing But a Vehicle for the Real Us?

The above linked article contends that homosexuality is disrespectful of humans, as humans, but that this disrespect is not seen as disrespect, at least implicitly, because of a wide spread notion that we aren't really our bodies, but that the real us is like the driver of an automobile.
The same argument is often made concerning race. That is, that we are a raceless spirit or soul simply inhabiting a body the way a driver sits in a car.
And, while the author of the above article attributes this notion--that the body is just a disposable vehicle for the real us--to Descartes in the 17th Century, it actually goes back thousands of years.
Among some religious people, this concept leads to self-flagellation and various other punishments for the "evil" body that we supposedly inhabit.
