Jim Righeimer's lead over Wendy Leece just increases with each passing day.  Today, his lead  increased to 1,424 votes over Leece.  Meanwhile, Leece's lead over McEvoy has dropped to 721 votes.

OUR DINGBAT METER IS RISING ON LEECE

At last night's City Council meeting, Wendy Leece tried to get the Council to appoint former mayor Arlene Schafer--who was just voted off the Costa Mesa Sanitary District Board on November 2nd--to replace Leece on the Orange County Vector Control District Board.

This is a position usually filled by a Councilperson.

This gig pays $100 bucks a meeting. Had she been appointed, it would have allowed Schafer to continue working on other gigs that pay various amounts.

The Council turned this down.

Now, Ms. Schafer is a nice woman, and we like her, but this sort of stuff where people like Leece try to give full employment to their supporters and pals who get defeated in elections, has to stop.

Elections matter, and the City Council shouldn't be an employment agency for politicians who lose them and who hang around after they're out of office trying to get appointed to under the radar positions that make them money and which should be filled by an elected representative.

If you don't want the OCVCD seat, Ms. Leece, then pass it on to another Councilmember.  We elect Councilmembers to fill such seats.

RIGHEIMER'S VOTE LEAD CONTINUES TO GROW

The first count after all precincts reported in on 11/3 showed that the highest vote getter in the Costa Mesa City Council election, Jim Righeimer, led  2nd place finisher Wendy Leece by 983 votes.

The latest count from 11/14 shows he now has 1,403 votes more than Leece.  The Registrar will continue counting, but is close to finishing counting all votes and  should have them all counted today or tomorrow.

Righeimer has never once trailed Leece in all of the daily counts.

Clearly, citizens of Costa Mesa have rejected all the negative campaigning put on by the unions and have said that they trust Jim Righeimer more than they trust Wendy Leece.

Remember, Leece came into this race not only as the incumbent, but also with the title Mayor Pro Tem which should have given her the vote advantage. Remember also that those trying to defeat Righeimer spent at least three times as much as Righeimer spent.

INDIANS (feathered) HAVE POW WOW TO DISCUSS PROBLEMS

You have to read down to the seventh paragraph in the above linked column to find this sentence that is the real nub of the problem faced by the Indians and all other distinct peoples. The writer of the column just put this in as a throw away line:

"The National Congress of American Indians was founded in 1944 in response to assimilation policies being imposed on tribes by the federal government."

"Assimilation," when you're talking about a genetically distinct people, is just another word for genocide. You can also use the words "extinction" and "disappearance."

If you take the time to read the above linked article you'll see other subtle signs of the effects of assimilation and how it is even inadvertently countenanced by some Indian leaders themselves.

For example, Jefferson Keel is identified as the President of the National Congress of American Indians and as the lieutenant governor of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma.

Now, before Europeans came to America, do you think Indians called their leaders "Presidents," and do you think they had "lieutenant governors"?  Of course they didn't.  Those who use these terms have assimilated into European culture to some degree.  That is, they have adopted the terms used by European-Americans for various leaders in government.

When a distinct people loses its language, it's on the path to its own extinction.

You see that word Pow Wow, in the above title of this column?  According to Wikipedia it's a variation of the original powwaw used by the Narragansett Indians. Also according to Wikipedia it is now considered "disrespectful of  Native culture," when used to refer to a meeting of powerful people.  Now, why should that be the case?  Why should an English word for such a meeting be more acceptable and not disrespectful?

But, examples of assimilation needn't be as stark as what we see happening to the Indians. They are everywhere.

The English have been trying to "assimilate" their almost genetically identical cousins, the Irish, for centuries, and one of the ways they first tried to do this was to punish Irish people who spoke Gaelic instead of English.   See a parallel with the Indians?

But, instead of completely giving in to English, the Irish are trying to revive their own language.  Today, the head of the Irish government is called: Taoiseach (pronounced tee-ShoKH) which is Gaelic for leader.

In Eastern Europe, the Gypsies have also been targets of assimilation for centuries.

Today, the Han Chinese are trying to assimilate the Tibetans.

Many Jewish leaders today worry that Jews are being assimilated through intermarriage with non-Jews.

Now, the truth of the matter is that the various threads of assimilation we see among humans is what we also see throughout nature in the eternal struggle for existence and dominance in various environmental niches, as evolution--mainly via natural selection--continues on like a perpetual motion machine.

The difference between humans and other organisms is that we can study and understand the automatic ways of nature--including assimilation of distinct peoples--and we can act to change the course of history if we so desire.

Some Indians apparently understand these things and they are rejecting assimilation.

The Cherokee Nation, for example,  says that there is no such thing as a Black or White Indian (HERE) and has voted to deny tribal citizenship to the descendants of freed slaves who have been living among the Cherokees since before the Civil War.

The reality of nature is that genes are us.  Lose your genes and you are no longer you.

Will the American Indians continue to exist as a distinct people, or will they be assimilated away?  Time will tell.

The changes we see that constitute evolution, are nature's default settings. Humans have the ability to change some of those settings.

BUILD A COSTA MESA MARINA

Here's a story in the DAILY PILOT today (HERE) that touches on the fact that the demand for moorings in Newport Beach is greater than the supply.

Well, the answer is to provide more moorings or places to dock boats.

Where can that be?  In the Costa Mesa Marina of course.

You've seen the Costa Mesa Marina if you've driven to the west end of 19th Street, or if you've driven across the bridge on Victoria to Huntington Beach.

Oh sure, it just looks like dirt and brush to you, but that's where the Marina was planned to go until the idea was killed off by one vote on the Costa Mesa City Council years ago.

And, you think local elections don't matter?  One vote difference and the Westside of Costa Mesa would have been the most desirable part of Costa Mesa.

We've written extensively about this in the past, so we won't take your time doing it again, but we will say that with proper vision that Marina could still be a reality.

The late Donn Hall, a former mayor of Costa Mesa, is the guy who really pushed this idea, and if a Marina is ever built, the CM PRESS proposes that it be named after him.

We previously reported on this, but it doesn't hurt to be reminded about the problem again.

However, don't be lulled into thinking this is a "homeless problem." It isn't. It's a charity problem.  The charity bosses are drawing the homeless and also illegal aliens to Costa Mesa with their "compassion."  And, the liberal establishment is also helping turn our city into a new skid row by constantly puffing the work of the charities.

Triangle Square--Where Retailers Go to Disappear

William Lobdell has a column (HERE) in the Daily Pilot today about the latest attempt in Costa Mesa to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse.

This latest plan involves rebranding Triangle Square more as an entertainment hub with a modern gym, etc.  Think, single 30 somethings looking for Mr. or Ms. Right.

We hope it works, but we've been around too long to really think it will.

As we've written before, we see two ways to make Triangle Square work (without tearing it down and starting over):

1. Dig a cut and cover tunnel from the 55 Fwy down to 15th Street real fast and then turn the street above into a downtown pedestrian friendly open air town square with Triangle Square as the main focus of attention.

2.  Lease out Triangle Square to a college or government entity (such as the DMV or as City Hall for Costa Mesa) so that those who go there will have to go there and will have to park down in the caverns.

Had we been  active in Costa Mesa when Triangle Square was first proposed, you would have seen us going to the podium and telling the City Council that is was a mistake.

Even though we weren't involved in meetings back then, we can, in our mind, almost hear the sales pitch that was done.  And, it all involved getting the maximum  gross leasable square footage out of the available footprint.  The proforma probably looked  great and was no doubt full of dollar signs.

It's the kind of thing you pitch in cities such as New York or Tokyo where land is scarce and you have to go vertical.

Speaking of Tokyo, maybe Godzilla can rearrange Triangle Square for a new start.

The Costa Mesa Police Association Wants You To Donate Money To The Association

Here's a copy of a letter we just received from Ofc. Allen Rieckhof, President Cosa Mesa Police Association, asking for donations.

Say, aren't these the same people who just wasted something like $ 150,000 to try to defeat Jim Righeimer in the election this month?

And, aren't these the same people who drove around the city with a large sign that embarrassed Righeimer and his family because Righeimer had some bills about twenty years ago?

Maybe, if these mostly out of town city employees hadn't wasted money involving themselves in politics in our city, where most of them don't live and can't vote, they wouldn't have to send out letters like this.

In the letter, the CMPA writes that your donation will strengthen relations with "several local worthy groups and charities."  Of course, it doesn't name those worthy groups and charities.  One has to wonder if one of those groups is Costa  Mesa First; which also tried to defeat Righeimer.

GOBBLEDYGOOK FROM THE CITY ABOUT MARIJUANA
Link

At the next City Council meeting on 11/16, the Council will vote on new rules for medical marijuana clinics. The staff report is linked to above.

Here's one paragraph of the staff report.  See if you can figure out what this says in just one or two readings:

WHEREAS, the City intends to circumscribe its Zoning Code prohibitions to apply them to groups of three or more individuals possessing, cultivating, transporting, distributing, selling, etc. medical marijuana, which prohibition includes facilities engaging in the retail sale, dispensing or distribution of medical marijuana, when such facilities do not have an active role in the cultivation of their marijuana product or when the cultivation of their marijuana product occurs off site;

Folks, it's beyond us why the City Council puts up with this sort of thing and why they even bother reading some of the staff reports we've seen.

Another example is the staff report on bike trails that we previously reported on.  The most important thing about spending money on bike trails is to know how many people might actually be expected to use them, yet we couldn't find any statistics in the report that indicated that.

FEEDING AT LIONS PARK & BIKE TRAILS

We went to Lions Park today around noon. We saw about 50, presumably homeless people, in the large open shelter, receiving what looked like Spanish rice on small paper plates. Everything seemed orderly and we didn't see any trash being thrown around.

One thing we did note, and we've been seeing more of this lately, is that many homeless people had apparently arrived on bicycles.

Most of the bicycles we saw had backpacks, sleeping bags and other items tied to them. We don't know if this is a new phenomenon or not, but we did find it interesting. We immediately thought of how some in local government are pushing to spend tons of money on new bike trails in the city.  We're sure the homeless folks will thank them.

(Note: Above is a stock photo, and is not of any bikes we saw today.  The bike in the stock photo is actually packed a little more intensely than the ones we saw, but it would fit right in.)

I GET CALLED A WHITE SUPREMACIST...AGAIN--HO HUM, YAWN

I was called a white supremacist again the other day by one of the usual low I.Q. lefties whose mouth is bigger than his brain and who apparently doesn't understand that words have meanings.

Usually I don't bother with bigots like this, but since I was already thinking of writing a national column on the subject, I'll put a shorter version of it here:-

A white supremacist is one who believes in white supremacy. This is defined by Wikipedia as: White supremacy is the belief, and promotion of the belief, that white people are superior to people of other racial backgrounds.

I checked many definitions of the term and the above is fairly representative. None of the definitions I've seen, including the one above, fit what I believe.

Thus, by definition, I can't be a white supremacist.

Thinking one type of organism or one type of human is across the board "superior" to others is not in accord with reality and with the way life adapts and evolves. Superior? At what?

But this begs the question about what I do believe. Here it is in brief (to keep from boring you, I'll keep this mercifully short--but be aware that I've written books and hundreds of columns about these things):

GENERALLY: I believe in the ways of existence.

THIS MEANS (in part): I believe in what is called cosmic evolution. That is, that change is the only constant in the universe including on Earth. This includes changes in organisms, including humans.

EVEN MORE SPECIFICALLY: I believe that DNA (and the genes that are part of DNA) is the major determinant of the way life "IS," on Earth and that all life on Earth evolved from the forces that formed that first molecule of DNA which has expanded, changed, mutated, branched off, evolved all life on Earth.  This is a natural process and  is never ending as DNA automatically and endlessly "tries" to fill all of existence with itself.

If you've ever scratched your head when you've seen science articles about humans being this or that percentage the same as apes, or rats, or flies, or even bananas, you needn't wonder about it. The reason we share so much with all other living organisms is because we all came from  that first molecule of DNA that crossed the threshold from so-called non-living matter to living matter.

DNA is DNA no matter what organism it is in. The only difference is in the shuffle of the billions of combinations of the four chemicals that make up DNA.

Now, should any readers  not already be completely bored with what I believe, and want more information on how I see the above playing out in various ways, you can always buy my books (available on Amazon.com and elsewhere) or read my many columns that are all over the Internet.

I've written many thousands of words that flow naturally from the above brief statements of my beliefs.

Again, I think what I believe would bore most people who read the CM PRESS, so I'm not really pushing anyone to read my stuff.

But, I write to be read. If I didn't, I'd just keep a private diary.

Anytime someone takes a position on anything, there will be those who will disagree and there will be haters and bigots who will crawl out from under their rocks to spew their hatred with personal attacks.

We have a few of those haters and bigots in Costa Mesa.  You'll often recognize a few of them as the serial name callers--a pathetic, effete and impotent lot--posting comments at the DAILY PILOT.  They're like the Comic Book guy on the Simpsons; but not as bright or as good looking.

WE GET AN EXAMPLE OF THE LIBERAL GENE
Link to article about the liberal gene

In CM PRESS # 311 we wrote about the increasing number of homeless people (also illegal aliens) flocking to Costa Mesa as a result of the charity magnets that are giving them freebies and making them comfortable here.

Here's a comment we received from a reader about this:

Anonymous said...
Oh, my. You mean there are actually organizations that are giving out food to people who would otherwise go hungry? How terrible. The charities are not the problem. What do you think the real problem is?

November 10, 2010 4:47:00 AM PST
--------------------------------
The CM PRESS answers Anonymous:  The world is full of hungry organisms of all types, including people.  It is in the nature of living things that they will go to where they can get food.

In human terms, an over concentration of free food and free services in an area is how skid rows and slums are born.

It is not the responsibility of the citizens of Costa Mesa to feed all the hungry humans on the planet and turn our city into a skid row. In the long run this helps no one and harms the citizens of the city.

Many citizens now can't use Lions Park or the downtown library as a result of misplaced compassion. The Westside is full of gangs, illegal aliens and crime, also largely because of misplaced compassion.

We have churches coming to Costa Mesa from South County to feed the ever growing number of people who want free food and we have many charities here giving out all sorts of free services.

Maybe these fine out of town church people can get together with one of our own fine local church ladies--Wendy Leece--and transport the people who need these freebies down to South County.

[Photo above of people waiting for free food in a skid row--not in Costa Mesa--but similar to what you'll see at feeding stations in Costa Mesa.  Doubt it?  Go to Lions Park at feeding time.]

COSTA MESA CONSIDERING SPENDING BIG BUCKS ON BIKE TRAILS

At a time when Costa Mesa is going broke, the City Council is considering spending bushels of dollars on bike trails.

The CM PRESS has looked at the staff reports on this subject.  Maybe we missed this someplace in the dense paragraphs of bureaucratic double-speak, but we didn't see any stats about how many bicyclists might be served.

Are we spending big bucks for just a few bicyclists?  We don't know without more data.

This just looks like more busy work to keep staff fully employed with a feel good project that won't give us the most bang for the buck.

The photo above is of a bike trail in another city.

In cities with gangs, this is often the way bike trails quickly look. You do know that according to the CMPD, Costa Mesa has 7 Latino gangs, don't you?  And, you do know that the proposed Costa Mesa bike trails will be in some areas where those gangs are especially active.

The CM PRESS has a better idea:  How about we get rid of the gangs by thinning out the slums, and then maybe consider bike trails?

The Doing Our Part Everyday Saints charity has announced it will hold a fund raiser this week in Costa Mesa.  All the usual Swells are expected to show up and get their pictures and names in the paper.

Doing Our Part Everyday Saints points to its great success in Costa Mesa as an example of how people can get involved to make a difference.

HOMELESS INCREASING IN SOUTHWEST PART OF COSTA MESA

At today's joint Parks and Recreation Commission and Planning Commission meeting, the hot item was the problems being caused by a growing number of homeless people in and around Lion's Park.

Now, why do you suppose homeless people are congregating in that area?  It's simple.  There are many charity services in that area.  By hanging around there, they can get free food, free clothes, free medical and dental care and much more. They can also turn in cans and bottles at the local recycling center and then walk across the street and buy cheap booze.

Churches are coming to Costa Mesa to feed the homeless in the park. And, if the cuisine there isn't what the homeless people had in mind, they can simply walk up to the free Soup kitchen on 19th Street.

The CMPD supplied statistics to the meeting. In all of 2009 there were 129 incidents involving homeless in Lions Park.  From January-September 2010, that number had risen to 634 incidents.

Unfortunately, citizens in Costa Mesa have allowed a charity culture to grow in this city.  Charities are the business in this city. And, the City continues to fund the charities by giving them CDBG funds (our tax money).  The local newspaper continually publishes gushy articles about this or that charity.  Even the police department has officers partying and playing with the charities.

Folks, we've been writing about this for years.

If you want pigeons to leave an area of a park, just stop feeding them.  It works the same way with humans: stop feeding them, stop giving them freebies, stop making them feel welcome.

Meanwhile, it was also reported at today's meeting that the downtown library has had to hire a security guard to protect people using the library from the homeless people.  Overstuffed chairs have had to be replaced with wood ones because the former start smelling of urine and other smells of people who don't bathe too often.

The city is now considering hiring another security guard, this one to protect people using the Downtown Community Center adjacent to the library.

One Planning Commissioner and one Parks and Recreation Commissioner at the meeting said that they can no longer take their children to Lion's Park because of the problems.

Here's our precept: All living things gravitate to where they feel comfortable.   And, here's it's corollary: Remove the comfort and they'll leave under their own power.

THIS IS THE WAY FOR THE CMPD TO BUILD RESPECT WITH CITIZENS?
Link

When ICE deported some illegal aliens, Crissy Brooks wrote a tearful letter to a newspaper about how she had travelled to Tijuana to cry with the deported illegal aliens who were her neighbors and presumbably also, in some cases, clients of her charity, MIKA, which is headquartered in the Shalimar slum.

Now, Brooks gushes in the above linked article about Costa Mesa cops schmoozing with her neighbors in the Shalimar slum.

Say, are these the same out of town cops who wasted about $ 150,000 trying to defeat citizen and new City Councilmember Jim Righeimer and causing Righeimer and his family, including his young children, embarrassment about some bills he had 20 years ago?

If so, this just indicates how much change is needed in the CMPD.

Is it any wonder why more and more citizens are contacting us and saying they have no confidence in the CMPD?

Can it be that some out of town cops haven't heard that Costa Mesa is a Rule of Law City?  Or, maybe they've heard that but don't care?

Do the cops prefer illegal aliens to citizens?  Is that why quality of life calls that might be about illegal aliens, don't always seem to be handled in a timely manner?

COMMISSION APPOINTMENTS, IMPROVEMENT, CHARITIES

We believe that after every election, each Planning Commissioner and  each Parks and Recreation Commissioner should tender a resignation letter to the Council.

Then, the Council can accept or reject the resignations, and, where some resignations are accepted, appoint new members whose philosophy about the direction of Costa Mesa is more in tune with the new City Council.

And, speaking of appointments to the Commissions, whether as we've suggested above, or just piecemeal as in situations such as we face now where Jim Righeimer has been promoted to the Council, we believe that those on the Council who truly want to Improve (big "I") Costa Mesa should be careful in who they appoint.

You see, the Improvers watch and listen.  They never stop.  They are in this to make Costa Mesa a nicer city and they know that one must have the intelligence and proper vision of this city to understand that most  decisions--even some that seem unrelated to Improvement--made by the Commissions and the Council have an effect on Improvement.

We bring this up, because when Chris Steel won election--after 9 failed attempts--and only with the support of the Improvers, one of the first things he did when he got on the dais was to do a misguided "deep search" to find a new Planning Commissioner.

Then, instead of appointing someone who was steeped in Improvement and who understood the larger picture, he appointed a guy who had never been active in the city before, and who has never been active since he left the Planning Commission.  And, when he was on the Commission, this guy's votes were all over the landscape.  Why? Because he had no core thread of Improvement in his mind to see the big picture. Steel wasted a great opportunity to help Improvement.

Needless to say, once Steel made that appointment, the Improvers immediately started planning on defeating him in the next election (they would have recalled him if recalls weren't so difficult).

Here's the thing of it with Improvers.  They're not really loyal to persons.  They are loyal to a vision.  If they support certain people for the City Council or the Commissions, they do it not based on personalities but on their belief that they think this person or persons will further Improvement.

If they are let down, they'll turn on a dime and oppose that person or persons in every way possible.

As we've written many times before, most Improvers look at things that go before the Commissions or City Council by asking and answering three simple questions:  Will this help Improvement?  Will this be neutral?  Will this hurt Improvement?

If it will help Improvement, they'll support it. If it's neutral they'll often remain silent.  If it will hurt Improvement, they'll make their views known, and often very forcefully.

Now, here's where a lack of intelligence (maybe, lack of consciousness is a better term here) and proper vision may come in.  Wendy Leece apparently thinks she's all for improving Costa Mesa. In fact, she'll tell you that.

Unfortunately, Wendy apparently doesn't understand that some of the charities that she gives moral support to are actually helping drive Costa Mesa, and especially the Westside, down lower.

It's the old feed one pigeon and you'll end up with hundreds of pigeons situation.  And, that's what is going on with some of the charities.  They're magnets, and on the Westside, they're magnets for illegal aliens.

Some who support those charities look at the individual people involved and think they're doing good by making them feel warm and loved in Costa Mesa.  What they fail to realize is that they're harming the stable citizens of this city by allowing Skid Row conditions to fester and grow because of their misplaced compassion.

Programs that seem compassionate but which deny human nature are doomed to fail.  Remember the "War on Poverty"?  It didn't work.  It was just a bunch of kumbaya crap that tried to deny human nature.  We could list other such programs, both in the national sphere and also many right here in Costa Mesa, but the point is made to those who can think in a straight line and it'll never be made to those who can't.
