SCIENTIST GETS HONORED FOR DISCOVERING TRUTHS ABOUT HUMAN OBESITY BY STUDYING INSECTS

The discovery: Appetite in almost all animal species is driven by the need for protein. Overeating is caused by not getting enough protein in the diet.

There are universals about life, and those among us who say things such as "You can't compare humans to bugs," are very wrong.

Needy and homeless flocking to Costa Mesa

When I've used ants, pigeons and even alligators to explain why Costa Mesa has so many needy people coming here, there is often a couple of  people who will whine that you can't compare humans to ants, pigeons or alligators.  They are wrong.  You certainly can and should, if you want to understand the homeless and needy people invasion of Costa Mesa.

And, if it isn't clear, the answer is simple:  Living organisms gravitate to where they are comfortable. And, on the comfort scale, food and other basic needs come first. It is the same with ants, pigeons, alligators and humans.

Want it even clearer:  They are coming here because of the charities.

LIFESTYLE CHOICES CAN BE PASSED ON TO FUTURE GENERATIONS VIA DNA

I love it when science catches up to things that I've been writing about for years.

The standard belief is that our germ cells (sperm and eggs) can't be changed by what happens to us in our lives.  The usual example given is that if you have an arm cut off, your subsequent children won't be missing an arm.  This is often used to discount Lamarckism.  The reality is that sperm cells (but not eggs) are very malleable and it is males who bring the most novelty to a new child but the changes that are passed on are more subtle than missing an arm.  It is at the subtle level where science must look for the changes.  And the subtle changes can have a cumulative effect over generations.

DNA can also be programmed and reprogrammed through various methods--via sound and light, for example--and science is also starting to understand this.
