We hire police officers to do a professional job. We pay them well and we give them good benefits. They are not working for free or out of the goodness of their hearts. They are not being altruistic. They are supposed to be professionals and they are supposed to do a professional job. That's why we hired them. That's why we pay them. So, some of the gushy appreciation mini events are a little over the top.
Now, if the police officers all worked for free and got no benefits, then more than the uniform groupies, the haters, the kooks, and people with inadequate personalities would be in the front ranks gushing over them.
Police officers are SUPPOSED to do their jobs. They are not doing us a favor by doing their jobs, anymore than a mechanic or a city manager or anyone else is doing us a favor for simply doing their jobs.
So, are those who hold these little gushathons implying that they're praising the police officers for doing competent jobs? If so, it has to be said that we also expect that from them. If they don't do a competent job then, like anyone else we hire, they should be let go.
So, maybe we should hold some gushathons in front of city hall for the clerks who work in the building and maybe we should hold gushathons for those who mow the lawns. Why not? They're also employees.
Doing what you are hired to do and doing it competently and professionally is just part of the job, no matter what the job is.
Professionals are often embarassed when groupies thank them, and the usual reply is: "Thanks, but I was just doing my job." That's what we said when I was in the Marines and we were approached by camp followers and uniform groupies.
