SWALLOWS MAY BE GIVING US AN EXAMPLE OF RAPID EVOLUTION
There's cursory evidence that swallows that live near roads are developing shorter wings than swallows who live further away from roads. Shorter wings apparently allow the road swallows to maneuver faster to avoid being hit by cars.
A couple of background things that one might want to know.
First, evolution doesn't happen when the environment is stable. In the present case, the environment of the swallows has been disrupted by humans and their roads, and the swallows are apparently adapting and evolving. If this continues, the road swallows, who can now be called, at the very least, a deme, may develop into a separate subspecies (subspecies is the same as race, breed or variety) and then into a separate species incapable of breeding with other swallows; provided there is no gene flow before the leap to specieshood is made.
Second, evolution is traditionally thought to require thousands of years, but more and more research on various organisms shows that it can happen very rapidly. For example, evolution in fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) has been shown to be possible in as little as eight generations.

MARCH 27, PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING AGENDA
This is the weaker of the two commissions we have in the City, and unlike the Planning Commission, the Parks and Recreation Commission (PRC) is not required by law. Still, the PRC does serve as the farm team for possible City Council candidates.
