PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION ENDORSED IN CANADAThe CM PRESS has called for a similar system to replace our two party scam in the U.S. for years.
Under our present two party system, small parties stand little chance of being able to represent their particular constituencies in government.
Meanwhile, the Democrats and Republicans continue to look like Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum as they both talk about big tents and changing principles to appeal to the same groups.
By trying to appeal to the bland "everyone" as the Democrats and Republicans must do to win elections, they leave millions of voters with no representation for issues that may be important to those voters.
Proportional representation would give minor parties of all stripes a chance to get into elective offices and be heard.
And, it is from those elective offices--and the legitimacy that holding those offices affords--that the minor parties can most effectively make their cases for their particular views without fear of losing their seats as would be the case in our present winner take all elections. Thus, they can satisfy their constituencies and try to convince others of the rightness of their positions and policies.
The way this works in Great Britain, is that all parties put up a certain amount of money to run their candidates. If their candidates win over a certain percentage of the vote, the money is returned to the parties. But if their candidates fail to get that percentage, the parties lose their money. This keeps most nutjobs from running all over the place.

In addition to the above charity event, there was another big one held last weekend by MIKA at the Downtown Community Center LINK. You will note in the linked article that MIKA helps people in "Costa Mesa's low income neighborhoods."
All these charity events and related news items makes you wonder about Costa Mesa's direction, doesn't it?
Say, why weren't these charity events held in Newport Beach? You know why.
Oh well, don't worry, the City Council has authorized $85,000 of your tax dollars to let an architect come up with some ideas on how to remodel our perfectly good City Hall lobby. No, that money is not to do the work, it's just to come up with the ideas. The work will be in the millions of dollars.
And, meanwhile, the charities will continue to act as magnets that help drive down the quality of life in Costa Mesa for stable citizens and cause them to flee to cities where the American dream is still a reality instead of the American nightmare that our City Council should be trying to change.
Folks, most decent people have compassion for people who are less fortunate, but turning Costa Mesa into one giant skid row is not going to help anyone.
