MY EXPERIENCE WITH UNIONS

I wasn't a very good waiter (but I did work as one for a time--a short time), so when I was acting in  New York City I did office work to pay the rent.

When I was hired by the New York Times to work in their HQ just off Times Square, I was handed some papers to sign to join a union.  I said I didn't want to join the union.  I was told that if I wanted the gig at the Times I had to join the union.  So, I joined.

Then, as an actor, I wanted to join the Screen Actors Guild ( a union by another name), but I was told that I couldn't join because I had just been doing stage plays and hadn't at that time appeared in a movie.

So, I set out to get some small part in a movie.  Then I was told that I couldn't appear in a movie because I wasn't in SAG. 

You see the problem. You can't be in SAG unless you're in a movie and you can't be in a movie unless you're in SAG.

Finally, I went on a cattle call for a SAG film.  The deal was that the director had to interview all the SAG actors who were right for the part  before he could even look at non-SAG actors like me.  If he didn't like any of the SAG actors, he could then pick a non-SAG actor.

The director wanted me for the part.  That's how I joined SAG.

Unions are funny things. When you don't want to join, you have to. When you do want to join, you can't.

NEW EQUIPMENT QUICKLY IDENTIFIES ILLEGAL ALIENS

C'mon Costa Mesa City Council, get on board with this and with E-verify. 

Many of our problems in Costa Mesa are caused by illegal aliens and their supporters.  They are helping keep the Westside as an ethnic ghetto.

How about also making sure the new police chief, when he's selected, will be on top of this and that he won't start giving free food to illegal aliens and telling them that they're welcome here.
