CM PRESS # 536

City to schedule Council study session on employees association’s audit of Costa Mesa budget

Costa Mesa's City CEO Tom Hatch said today that he will thoroughly review the financial analysis of Costa Mesa’s budget paid for by the Orange County Employees Assn. as soon as he gets a complete copy and will then  schedule a City Council study session to discuss the findings.

The Orange County Employees Assn. provided Hatch an executive summary of the analysis, and  Mayor Gary Monahan will give the association time at this evening’s City Council meeting to summarize the findings.

“Once we have the audit in hand, we will provide a full response as quickly as possible,” Hatch said. “I’ll also ask the association to make a presentation at a council study session so the Council members and public can have a thorough understanding of what’s being proposed.”

The CM PRESS believes it is a mistake to just let the OCEA make a presentation based on a bullet point executive summary, unless there is a rapid response counter presentation from the City's financial department presented just after the OCEA presentation.

What is likely to happen tonight is that the OCEA will trot out some partial figures based on union favorable assumptions and projections that will put the City in a bad light.

Unless there is an immediate response from the City, those figures will grow legs and be used for PR purposes to bash the City Council until the City can respond at a study session.

NOW IT COMES OUT...STAVELEY RAN FOR MAYOR OF ANAHEIM IN 2002 AND WAS ENDORSED BY THE ORANGE COUNTY CENTRAL LABOR COUNCIL AND THE ORANGE COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY
Link

Staveley is a liberal politician!  Now his nasty and unprofessional resignation letter makes more sense.

Who in the hell vetted this guy before turning the CMPD over to him?

Couldn't it have been anticipated that he would fight the City Council and the citizens of Costa Mesa and be for the unions and out of town union employees?

WATCH AS A FAIR SHARE OF THE 82% OF COSTA MESA'S EMPLOYEES WHO REFUSE TO LIVE IN COSTA MESA SHOW UP AT THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT AND WON'T SAY WHERE THEY LIVE

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$--82% REFUSE TO LIVE IN COSTA MESA

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$--18% LIVE IN COSTA MESA

The out of town employees want you to think they live in and care for Costa Mesa.  They don't.  They care about the cities where they live.  That's just human nature.

It's too bad that most of the money we pay our employees isn't circulated right here in Costa Mesa but goes to other cities at the close of city business each day.

WHAT HAPPENED TO STAVELEY?
[Yes, in case you were wondering, we often use the A-Frame sign on a trailer as the symbol for the CMPD.]
Sure, Chief Staveley is a retired cop and the years may have caught up with him, but the resignation letter he sent was so beyond the pale, so self-destructive, so unprofessional and so childish that one has to feel sorry for the guy.

A letter so devoid of facts, so full of name calling, so replete with invective is not the sort of letter one expects from a top executive and someone who was gifted with a caretaker position until a permanent chief could be found.

One has to wonder if the toxic internal politics and the hate and bigotry coming from the lefty clique within the CMPD are so strong and mind numbing that Staveley simply got caught up in the arrogant and unprofessional culture that appears to be the stock in trade of a few individuals in the department who may wield far more influence than they should and who want to control the City Council and the city for their own benefit and to use their uniforms to push their lefty agenda.

HERE'S CEO HATCH'S RESPONSE TO STAVELEY'S UNPROFESSIONAL RESIGNATION LETTER

Folks, as I write this, it's 7:42 AM on June 21.  I just got this press release this very minute. You will note that the press release linked to above is dated June 20.

Why did this take so long to get to the CM PRESS?  I actually had to read it first on an out of town liberal blog.

Because the libs got Hatch's press release first, they were able to spin things their way instead of just presenting what Mr. Hatch had to say as I've done above so you can make up your own mind.

The City has to do a better job of communicating in a timely fashion or the PR war will be lost.

A WHOPPING 82% OF COSTA MESA'S 575 EMPLOYEES DON'T CHOOSE TO LIVE IN THIS CITY

Yet, many of these out of town employees have been used to running Costa Mesa for years.

Now that we have a City Council that is trying to take control of this city for those who actually do live here, we are seeing the out of town employee unions having all sorts of hissy fits.

And, what about the budget and layoffs?  Even if the City is not going broke, should we still pay more for services that we can get them elsewhere?  Is that how you do things in your family?  Do you pay more for a gallon of milk at one store when you can get the same thing at a much better price at the store next door?

Folks, what is going on in Costa Mesa right now, is more than just about a budget.  It's about who runs Costa Mesa.

Our view at the CM PRESS has always been that it is the citizens of a city who should be in charge.  And, that's the way our electoral system is set up.  We get to vote for members of the City Council who will supposedly act in our best interests.  Why would they act in our best interests?  Because they also live here in Costa Mesa.

Unfortunately, the system has become corrupt and out of town unions have been able to buy Council members over the years who then pay back the out of town unions with golden goose contracts that screw the citizens of the city.

The majority on the Council is trying to stop that.  They're trying to give the government back to the citizens of Costa Mesa.

OUT OF TOWN SHILLS CAN'T THINK IN A STRAIGHT LINE

Take a look at the comment from JCaldwell below that follows the article about Staveley taking a hike.  This commenter obviously doesn't live in Costa Mesa or he or she would know that Staveley is not an iconic figure and that he wasn't building CM into an ever better city while the Councilmembers were in diapers.

Staveley was temp help.

JCaldwell at 10:25 PM June 20, 2011

Oh my god! Staveley has been one of the iconic pillars in CM for the many years I've lived here. For him to quit means we are now on the brink of turning into another run down Santa Ana. Who do I trust...Staveley or the sniveling little twerps in who were in diapers when this MAN was building CM into an ever better city. And now the diaper brigade wants to dismantle our once proud city. Everybody move now before your house values plummet to Santa Ana levels!

  1. With an incompetent at the helm of the police department, it's easy to see why the death of Huy Pham was never investigated.

    Good riddance Staveley!

  2. What a weird way to resign... You don't usually see this kind of childish nonsense from police officers or administrators.

  3. I've lived in Costa Mesa all of my very long life and I never heard Staveley's name mentioned until he became interim chief of police.

He's probably the one who has been goading all the cops to do their hate mongering on the local blogs. A decent leader would have asked his followers to abstain from such nastiness. Staveley obviously has no shame.

  4. Hi cmpress.
Can you post other cities with huge percentages of local employees? I think that would really help bring home that CM is different from other cities.

Why is our city so low? i expect other cities are mostly requiring all police and city workers to live in the same city?

I know these city employees buy their food here during the days, buy their gas here and much more. But that pales in comparison to property taxes and the like.

    Keep up the great blog!!
