The meeting will be held in cramped City Hall Conference Room 1A starting at 4:30 P.M.
Why this is important: The proposed ordinance will allow fee simple town homes to be developed in Costa Mesa without long reviews and requests for variances on lot lines, open space, etc.
If done right, such developments can be a plus for Costa Mesa. But, if not done right, they can be a nightmare.
Although the staff report indicates that there will be no changes to parking requirements, we can almost guarantee you that developers will come in asking for variances so they can underpark their developments. Underparked developments can be a major headache in most neighborhoods in the city.
On the plus side, if developers raze some functionally obsolete apartments on the Westside, or in Mesa North, or Mesa del Mar and put in town homes, we could see some improvement to the area. But, our expectation is that what will really happen is that developers will target older single family homes, mostly on the Eastside, and just increase the density, parking and traffic problems over there.
With the above in mind, we believe the City should at least explore the possibility of limiting this ordinance to certain overlay areas instead of rolling it out for the city as a whole.

Secretary of State John Kerry accidentally threw a monkey wrench into the plans of the warmongering
neocons who are frothing at the mouth to attack Syria, when at a news conference he answered a question from a reporter by saying that if Syria gave up its stockpile of chemical weapons they could avoid an attack by the U.S.
When the CM PRESS heard about what Kerry had said, and even before Syria and Russia responded, we told someone that we would immediately accept that condition if we were Syria. After all, you can't legally use chemical weapons, so giving them up is no great loss. And, if you ever do need some, you can quickly make them with your basic chemistry set.
To us, an important part of this story is how fast the Russians were able to pounce on it. This indicates the old ponderous Kafkaesque Soviet bureaucracy, that couldn't act unless layers of functionaries first reviewed things in triplicate, has been eliminated or streamlined and the Russians are now able to pivot on a dime to world events.
As you'll read in the above linked article, the Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov called Kerry while the latter was on his plane heading back to Washington, and he essentially told Kerry that the Russians and Syrians had heard what Kerry had said and that they had accepted that deal. Ooops. That didn't make the neocon warmongers happy, but they were now checkmated.
The above reminds us of various cases that you learn about in law school. Here's a short version. Man "A" writes a contract for Man "B" and tells "B" that he must accept by 5:00 P.M. Tuesday. Then, "A" realizes that he's made a big mistake in the money or terms in the contract that is to the advantage of "B." So, "A" then tries to hide so "B" can't convey his acceptance. "B" then knocks on "A's" door, pretending he's delivering pizza or something like that, and when "A" opens the door, "B" yells "I accept."

UK FIRM WINS VENTILATION CONTRACTS AT CERN

The above small puff piece, about a company doing some ventilation work, may not seem to have much news value, but to those watching the work going on at CERN with the Large Hadron Collider, it's just more evidence that the folks there are serious about putting the pedal to the metal when they fire up the LHC again. We know that new larger magnets are being installed to keep the beams on track, and this puff piece indicates that they're working to keep the temperature close to absolute zero when they increase the power.
