LEFTY COLLEGE STUDENT HAS COLUMN IN DAILY PILOT CALLING FOR MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN COSTA MESA

Here's our short answer:  No.

Implicit in columns like the one linked to above and also in the thinking of many lefties, is the unstated view that somehow Costa Mesa is an island cut off from the rest of the world, so if Costa Mesa is improved and home prices go up, those who can't afford those prices are somehow trapped here and are simply thrown out onto the streets.  Of course, this is nonsense.

There are many cities with lower home prices than Costa Mesa.  If you can't afford to live here, move there. Santa Ana is just across the freeway and homes are a lot cheaper there.  Don't do us any favors by staying here where you can't afford to live.  Move.

Another thing this college student doesn't tell readers is that Costa Mesa is already upside down--60 percent of those living in Costa Mesa are renters and only 40 percent are homeowners. This is not a good ratio for the stability of our city and should be reversed.

We don't need more cheap apartments, we need fewer.

Another thing that is happening is that lefties want Costa Mesa to fix a regional need for lower cost housing.

In plain English:  Many Newporters don't want to put in low cost housing in their city.  Instead, they want to be lumped with Costa Mesa as part of one region, and then they want Costa Mesa to put all the low cost housing for both cities in Costa Mesa as though we are a neighborhood of Newport. Then, Newporters can say that their low cost housing obligation has been fulfilled by Costa Mesa.

Don't let this happen, folks.

Exit polls in the elections being held today in Norway indicate that after 90 years, the socialists are losing and the country is moving right.

And, guess what, Costa Mesa?  One of the rightist parties is winning with a platform that pushes putting more money into the infrastructure.

So, Australia has already moved right.  Now it's Norway. Other European nations are also moving right.  Golden Dawn is gaining in Greece. Rightists in France are gaining power.   The story is pretty much the same in much of Europe.

CITY SHOULD MOVE FASTER ON THE BROUHAHA OVER THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY

The CM PRESS has tried to get information from the City about the 60th Anniversary situation, but we've been told nothing.

We can understand keeping personnel matters confidential, but this is really dragging on far too long and it just makes it look like a cover up.

We're paying two employees while they're on leave during this investigation.  If they've done nothing wrong, then the City should get them back to work. If they've done something wrong, then let's find out what it is.

Was there a minor violation of a rule?  Something major?  Did someone in City Hall make a mistake in putting them on leave while City CEO Hatch was out of town?  Was there an error in judgment? Incompetence someplace in the system?

There are lots of questions that can be raised about this, and since the event in question was only for a few days, there can't be that many records that have to be checked, or that many invoices that have to be tracked back to their source, or that much money that has to be accounted for.

We've seen hints that there are suspicions of favoritism in selecting the food vendors who were at the event and that few of these vendors were even from Costa Mesa.  Is that what is being investigated?  We don't know.

We've also seen hints that because this whole party was rushed (it was?) that normal procedures weren't followed?  Is that the rub?

There was even a citizen committee organizing the party and there were some very seasoned activists on the committee who have been around for years and who have been involved in many civic activities--how did anything get past them?

We hope that this matter will be resolved soon and that the city will release all appropriate documents that the public has a right to see.

COGNITIVE DISSONANCE

Mental conflict that occurs when beliefs or assumptions are contradicted by new information. When confronted with challenging new information, most people seek to preserve their current understanding of the world by rejecting, explaining away, reacting angrily, or avoiding the new information or by convincing themselves that no conflict really exists between their beliefs and assumptions and the new information.

The SCIFI MOVIE VERSION OF THE ABOVE DEFINITION: Robot with electrical sparks flying from its body and smoke coming from its "ears" saying over and over: "Does not compute, does not compute, does not compute."  Say, that actually sounds like a couple of the lefty pukes in Costa Mesa.

This is one of the things we see in Costa Mesa among some of the lefties who are so conditioned to think the world is a certain way that they have a mental conflict when faced with facts that counter their false beliefs and assumptions.

Take our frequent links to Black on White hate crimes for an example.  These links that we provide are real.  The violent attacks are real.  Whites are overwhelmingly the victims of race bias crimes, and when these hand full of lefties see the links that we report, some of these lefties experience serious cognitive dissonance and psychological problems.

Hey, lefties, the world is not as you believe it is.  You can try to ignore the facts, and you can try to intimidate others into silence, but the facts remain.

If the attacks were coming from Asians or Latinos or any other group and there were so many of them that one could see a statistical pattern that jumps off the page at you, we'd also link to those.

MASSIVE BIKER PROTEST IN WASHINGTON, D.C. ON 9/11

It'll be interesting to see how many bikers actually show up.

There are lots of big mouth do-nothings on blogs--as you realize when you read the crap on one sissy's blog.

EAST 17TH STREET HIPSTER HAVEN--WEST 19TH STREET NEXT

You may have seen the above story in the OC REGISTER which is behind their paywall.  If you aren't a subscriber to that paper and haven't seen it, we can tell you that the crux of the article is that E. 17th Street has become similar to 2nd Street in Belmont Shore and other trendy areas of various cities and has attracted a young, upwardly mobile crowd.

Here's what we think is important in this for the Westside.  As part of the Improvers' vision for the Westside is the notion that the Triangle will serve as the hub of a genuine downtown for Costa Mesa and the two major arterials close to it will be like spokes.  East 17th is one of those spokes.  West 19th should be another. A portion of Harbor Blvd. and Newport Blvd. will be other spokes.

With the proper plays by the City Council, some upscale retailers who want to get into the action on E. 17th Street but who can't find locations there, can be convinced that W. 19th Street is going to also become more upscale and that by getting in on the ground floor and not being afraid to pioneer, they will maximize their investments in the long run.

We see the downtown area of Costa Mesa as a place that will attract out of towners for a night out. A place with sidewalk cafes.  A place with many pedestrians.  Lots of bicycles.  Sports bars.  Small restaurants. Boutique specialty shops.  Places to buy art.  And, much, much  more.

Here's the reality.  Newport Beach has nothing like what can develop in Costa Mesa's downtown to attract young, upwardly mobile people.

Over time, we'll find that the people who discover this downtown area, including W. 19th Street, will also decide to move here to be near the action.  This will improve the demographics of the area and we'll then see even more upscale merchants competing to get in.

This is how an upscale, rather than a downscale spiral, is created.

NO MORE VARIANCES FOR UNDERPARKED DEVELOPMENTS!

Back when we started the CM PRESS in the late '90's our major issue was to help spur the improvement of the Westside to help keep it from devolving into a permanent ghetto (some at that time were actually pushing plans that would have made it that way).

The idea that many of us have worked on for years is to help the Westside grow almost organically (with some appropriate nudges from the City Council) as a great part of the city and one that takes advantage of its closeness to the ocean. We did not want to see it become a new Huntington Park (as one person wanted).

To help with improving the Westside, many of us suggested easing up on various building requirements so developers could be attracted ro risk their money in an area that in parts looked like, and had the crime and other problems of slums.  And, yes, there are still some areas like that, but in general the Westside has improved.

Now, however, we think it is time to pull back on at least one concession that we give to developers--variances on parking requirements.

You may have heard us bring this up at Planning Commission and City Council meetings, and we'll continue to do so, until both bodies get so tired of hearing us say it over and over that they take action.

AGENDA FOR TONIGHT'S PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING

Not much on the agenda.  The thing to start watching out for on agendas both for the Planning Commission and the City Council are requests for variances on parking.

We have to stop the granting of variances for underparked buildings.

HOW TO COMMENT

We welcome comments that add to the discussion, but we try to hold back comments that are just smears or which contain information about others that can't be easily verified because it is not in the public record.

We receive lots of comments that are good for several lines but then the commenter slips in unverifiable damaging information about some private person in the city, and since the software with this blog doesn't allow us to edit comments, we have to kill the whole comment.

For most of the years that we've been publishing the CM PRESS we didn't accept comments at all, but since we've started accepting them, we've amassed many hundreds of comments that didn't make it to publication for one reason or another.  We know this can be frustrating for commenters, but that's the way it has to be.
Keep trying.

It's nothing personal if your comment doesn't appear.

Also, if you have tips on anything in the city, let us know via our comment form, and if you want the tip to not be published, say that clearly in your comment and we won't publish it as you've written it, but we may investigate and subsequently write something in our own words concerning the subject of your tip (without mentioning you in any way).
