LIMBAUGH DEMONSTRATES A STUPID STREAK FOUND IN MANY CONSERVATIVES
HERE's an article from THE BLAZE about Rush Limbaugh expressing surprise that many illegal aliens don't want to become U.S. citizens.
Why was Limbaugh surprised? Well, the reasons go deeper than touched upon in the article and go to an ingrained but false belief in the minds of some jingoistic conservatives, such as Limbaugh, that everyone on the planet wants to be an American. This is simply not true. And, those who do want to be citizens of this country usually want it for perceived personal benefits, not because they are patriotic.
Limbaugh's particular screwy mindset often has him saying, in best aracial form, that the reason the U. S. is "great" is because of our "Constitution" and our "freedom." You may also recall that dopey George W. Bush used to say, in a similar vein, that terrorists hated us because of our "freedom."
Saying that America is great because of the Constitution would be a little like saying that the reason a particular cake is good, is not because of the ingredients, but because of the words on the recipe page.
On a local level, you'll hear Wendy Leece saying that "We Costa Mesans are special." This is just another jingoistic variant on the Limbaugh and Bush mindset. You'll also hear some Tea Party types saying things such as "Don't put a hyphen in my name, I'm just an American." Again, this is a variant expression of the same mind set.
Here's the reality in as few words as possible:
1. America is not primarily "great" because of the Constitution, but the Constitution is a secondary factor.
In fact, America may not even be so great these days, but that's for a longer discussion.
At any rate, the reason that America became great was because it was mostly a White country. And, because of historical facts and events those Whites (mostly from England) who founded this country tried to put some protections for citizens against government into the Constitution as the Bill of Rights, and the ideas for these rights weren't the product of any genius of the Founders, they were put there because they corrected some actual and real problems that were current in England with the government having too much power over individuals.
2. Illegal aliens aren't coming here to be Americans. They like being Mexicans. They like their own country. They come here because they can make more money here and get other benefits and many freebies that they may find hard to get in Mexico. Watch any soccer game between Mexico and the U.S. and you'll see most of the stands are full of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, and you'll see that they cheer almost to the person for Mexico, not the U.S.
Officially or unofficially, if Amnesty passes, we'll have a population of eleven to thirty million people here who will have dual citizenship, and who will be able to dart back and forth across the border to get the best from each country, while present American citizens will not have this luxury.
