NEWSPAPER WAR IN NEWPORT-MESA

The OC REGISTER has decided to publish the CURRENT, which covers Newport-Mesa, five days a week in broadsheet format.

Starting in May, the 20 page Current will be folded inside the Register of those who subscribe to the latter.

Will Newport Beach and Costa Mesa residents switch from the Daily Pilot to the Register/Current in enough numbers so that advertisers will be drawn to the Current?

As we wrote some time ago, the real war will be to attract advertisers, but to attract advertisers a newspaper has to have readers. To get readers the paper will have to do many local personality stories.

And, to romance advertisers, what small newspapers will often do is approach local advertisers and offer them freebie puff pieces in the paper if they place a certain number of ads.  We know, because we've written a number of those puff pieces over the years.  The small newspapers will also try to undercut the ad rates of their competitors.

So, when you see "stories" about how Tammy and Tommy overcame adversity to open a cupcake shop in Newport-Mesa and how they've come up with their latest flavor "road-kill possum," and how everyone just loves it, don't be fooled into thinking it's a real news story.  Turn the page and you may also see a paid ad for Tammy and Tommy's Cupcakes.
