CALIFORNIA NOW $ 16 BILLION IN THE HOLE

Governor Brown thought the hole was "only" $ 9 billion as late as January.  Ooops.

This is what happens when you do so many things wrong when you're running a state.   The blame has to be laid not at the feet of the Dems or the Republicans per se, but at the corrosive policies both have helped establish in this state.

What should be done:  Stop all freebies being given to illegal aliens and others who won't work and who won't move to states where there are jobs. Cut red tape that is causing businesses to leave the state. Get state government costs under control.

And, most importantly, study and copy the actions of states that aren't having our problems.

JOHN DERBYSHIRE WONDERS ABOUT WHAT WE SHOULD CALL OURSELVES

We're not part of Conservatives Inc. nor are we White Supremacists.  We're not this and we're not that.  We have a little bit of this and a pinch of that in our views.

Most of us are for individual liberty, but we oppose abortion.  Most of us look to nature for clues, but we aren't tree huggers.  We're against race hatred, but we recognize race as a reality and most of us consider DNA and genes to be the most important element of organisms. We want smaller government closer to the people, but not the end of all government. We're mostly against foreign intervention, but isolationists doesn't quite apply.

Derbyshire wades into this as many of us have for years.  Most of the good names that would apply seem to have already been taken. Realists, would be nice, but it's gone. Buncha lefties grabbed that one, and even though it doesn't apply to them, they own it.  Libertarian applies somewhat to some of us, but somehow it's not always a good fit. Tea Baggers, well, nah, that's not a good fit for most of us. Bohemian or non-conformist also applies to some of us, but not to all who fit under this tent with no name.

The dilemma over a name isn't just a trifle.  We humans need to give names to things in order to correctly think about them and rally around the central ideas of what is named.

This reminds me of the word Existentialist and how the world's leading Existentialists have mostly said the word doesn't apply to them.

We'll let you know if anyone comes up with a name that most of us can accept.
