WHY DO ZEBRAS HAVE STRIPES?  DARWIN COULDN'T FIGURE IT OUT

New studies seem to indicate that the stripes protect Zebras from flies.  For some reason, flies don't like to land on anything that has Zebra stripes.

Once again, nature is seen as a frugal engineer that always seems to have a reason for its designs.

CMPD BUSTS ILLEGAL ALIEN ON THE WESTSIDE FOR STEALING A BIKE

On Wednesday morning, 02-08-12, a resident of Huntington Beach contacted the Costa Mesa Police Department regarding his bicycle, which had been stolen from the gated yard of his residence on January 7th. The victim had filed a theft report at the time, and later found a craigslist advertisement for a bicycle matching his, a black 21-speed FUJI Road Bike, valued at approximately $450. The bike was listed on craigslist in Costa Mesa for $280. Posing as a prospective customer, the victim called the phone number listed in the ad, and arranged to meet with the seller to buy the bike. The seller identified himself as Denis Ramirez and provided the victim his address in the 700 block of W. Wilson Street to come and see the bike.


After contacting CMPD, the victim met with patrol officers in the area. A plainclothes detective also met with the victim, obtaining additional descriptive information on the bike. Posing as the victim/buyer, the plainclothes detective met with Ramirez at his residence, where assisting officers and detectives detained him while the bicycle was examined and confirmed to be the victim’s stolen bicycle. The victim noted that a bike light and seat bracket had been removed, which officers recovered from Ramirez’ residence after his telling them where to find the items. Denis Ramirez was arrested for possession of stolen property and transported to the Costa Mesa Jail for booking. He was additionally booked on an immigration hold.

Nope, it wasn't the CM PRESS.  We know more about reporting than to do that (we played a reporter in a movie once) and we worked for the NY Times at their NYC HQ (but not as a reporter).

As usual, and by rote, the cop said he feared for his life.

Watch the cover up as officials say they can't comment because of an on-going investigation.  That's also by rote and is often intended to make the public forget about the case.

What do you want to bet the Marine had no gun?

Why was he shot?  Because he allegedly failed to comply with commands of the cop.  Just more comply or die nonsense as we wrote in a couple of columns below this one.

Nature doesn't have a one size fits all design for humans or any other organisms.  Evolution builds in weaknesses and strengths in all living things.

Watch the film clips of the Russian boxers winning their bouts and note that against certain fighters they aren't throwing too many right crosses (the traditional knock out punch) but are throwing left and right hooks to the neck area just below the ear.

COURT SAYS NAMES OF COPS INVOLVED IN SHOOTINGS MUST BE REVEALED TO PUBLIC

This may hold down the number of questionable shootings. 

Some cops take a comply or die attitude in their dealings with the public. The unstated premise behind this attitude is that everyone they deal with is mentally stable and is making rational decisions.  Unfortunately, many people who are confronted by the police may have various types of mental or medical problems that cause them to not fully understand or be able to timely comply with the commands given them.

We're thinking of the young girl in Huntington Beach who was shot and killed by cops in that city after she allegedly charged them with a knife.  It turns out the knife was a small pen knife and the facts surrounding her "charging" seem to be somewhat blurry.

Recently, a kid in another state with a learning disability was shot and killed by cops when he didn't understand their commands.

In Las Vegas recently a driver of a car came close to being shot by the cops when he didn't comply with their commands.  While he avoided getting shot, they did beat him.  It turns out he was having a diabetic shock.

Then you have the case of Kelly Thomas up in Fullerton.  He wasn't shot by the cops, but they did beat him to death.  This never should have happened and if the cops had not had a comply or die attitude, it wouldn't have happened.

The stories go on and on.
