The race of the attackers isn't given. That's the usual procedure when they're not White. Read some of the comments and you'll see that some Chicago readers wonder aloud if the attackers are black and then as so often happens, one dimwit chimes in to say that this isn't about race and indicates that anyone who so speculates is a racist. Ho hum.
Yes, it is about race. When people of one race are the frequent victims of people of another race--in statistically significant ways--it damn well is about race and all such crimes whether they also involve robbery or some other cover crime should be treated like hate crimes.

| If I Only Had A Brain |
Costa Mesa has an emergency money account that is supposed to be maintained at a certain level. The rules for the use of this money say that it is to be used for physical emergencies such as floods, fires and the like.
However, because prior City Councils have larded up the City government with too many employees who receive high salaries and king's ransom benefits, the City has had to steal from this account to pay its everyday expenses.
At last night's City Council meeting, Councilmember Bever pointed out the above and said the City has to stop stealing from this account.
No sooner had he said that than did smarmy, pandering, dingbat Wendy Leece (if only there really were a Wizard) smugly said that Costa Mesa along with many other cities has been going through a financial emergency and that's why the City was taking money from that account (picture Wendy with a smug expression at this point that says "Ha Ha Bever I gotcha and I wuv our employees and they're the bestest in the whole wiiiiiiiide world and we should slooooow down and ain't I just a swell Councilperson and so compassionate and, er, like a Queen appointed by Gawd sitting up here holding back you evil men.").
Bever then told Wendy to read the rules because they specifically say the money can't be used for financial problems.
Wendy then wisely shut up.
