HOW THE GOVERNMENT CAUSED THE HOUSING CRISIS
I wrote about this a few years ago in the CM PRESS, and then received comments from a couple of readers who said I was wrong. I wasn't. The above article has a document that backs up everything I wrote.
Essentially, what was happening was that homes were seeing very fast double digit appreciation all across the country and people were making money on paper simply by putting a minimum down payment on a home and watching it appreciate.
It was a good time. It worked like this (general numbers to be clear): You put 10% down ($20,000) on a home worth $ 200,000. Then you got appreciation on the $200,000, not on your $ 20,000.
So, where else could you put $20,000 and get "interest" back on $200,000,and also have a place to live at the same time, and get a tax deduction to boot? I'll answer for you. No where.
The lefties in government, seeing the above happening, then thought, that since it's well known that people care more about their neighborhoods if they own their own property, that they could kill two birds with one stone, by encouraging minorities to buy homes. This would cause more people to have pride in their neighborhoods and should drive crime down.
At the same time, the lefties figured that even if many minority folks couldn't make the mortgage payments; that with the double digit appreciation, they could simply live in the homes for a year, then sell them and still make a nice profit that they could use to maybe buy a smaller home.
Everyone wins and gets to live the American dream, was the thought.
Of course, the banks had many checks and balances in place in order to avoid lending to people who couldn't pay them back. The Feds then moved in and demanded the banks loan to people with poor credit, and with no real steady income to pay back the loans.
As a result, many bad loans were made just to satisfy the Feds.
Now, the scheme might have worked if it had just been done in a few areas, but it went nationwide.
Suddenly, thousands and thousands of people who couldn't afford homes were buying them. And, when they couldn't pay on the loans, the banks had no choice but to foreclose by the thousands.
Then, to get their money back, the banks had to do fire sales on thousands of homes because of the sudden glut of homes hitting the market all at the same time, some in less than desirable neighborhoods, where there were few buyers.
That, in brief, is how it happened.

COSTA MESA MAY BAN As usual, many of the folks who comment on this article in the Daily Pilot apparently can't see the subtle meaning of this.
Consider, shhhh, in private and without saying it aloud, the Machiavellian intended (sic) consequences here.
Look, the City can't just kick homeless people out of Lions Park for being homeless. But, is there some other characteristic about homeless people other than being homeless? Well, yes, there are many, but how about smoking?
Many homeless people are big time smokers; it kind of goes with the turf. Under this ordinance, if they want to smoke, they'll have to leave the park. And, if they're chain smokers, they may never return to the park.
And, here's the subtle beauty of this move. Most of the lefties and the charity types who show up at City Council meetings to complain about everything the good Councilmembers do, are also against smoking.
Being against smoking for most of these folks is almost part of a religious creed for them. It's right up there with their support for abortion and the cliche that diversity is our strength.
So now, these lefties can't very well show up and demand that smoking be allowed in the parks.
Although Wendy Leece reflexively opposes everything the good Councilmembers do, she'll have a hard time demanding that smoking be allowed in the parks.
Checkmate.

Be sure to read this article and thank your lucky stars that Costa Mesa has four good Councilmembers who are taking action to stop a similar problem here.
A city can't spend more than it takes in. Period. You'll also see in the article that Compton kept hiring more city workers, when they should have been cutting back.
Costa Mesa is now being right-sized in spite of all the smears from the out of town haters and bigots and their local running dog scumbags.
Come the election next year, don't be fooled by the lefties who will try to tell you that they were the ones who helped Costa Mesa recover. They're not.
Now, if this Council will just take strong action to improve the Westside, Costa Mesa will be in great shape and will get off the downward slide.
What can the Council do? Start thinning out the slums. Yes, this will take bold and creative action on the part of the good Councilmembers, but we think they're up to the task. They just have to start.
Meanwhile, lefty Wendy Leece is putting her energies into giving moral support to charities and charity events that help keep the Westside the Worstside.

Nature never stops tinkering; and DNA, the molecule of life, adapts, competes, survives and expands into new niches.
If there is a way for DNA to convert something exterior to itself into energy, it will find that way, whether it is on the bottom of the ocean or in pits of acid.
