EYAK LANGUAGE AND EXTINCTION
The above linked story is about a kid from Europe who is learning to speak the Eyak language once spoken by a distinct people living in Alaska. At least that's the surface story.
The deeper story, for those with enough consciousness to understand, is about the extinction of the Eyaks.
How did they die off? Simple.They didn't reproduce enough and they interbred with other peoples. When those things happen, a lot more than a language dies; a people dies.
The last full-blooded Eyak, Marie Smith Jones (pictured), died in 2008 at the age of 89.
In 1948, Marie married a White man and had nine children, seven of whom are still alive.
These children who have 23 chromosomes from their mother that carry the genes that make an Eyak an Eyak, and 23 chromosomes from their father that carry the genes that make a White person a White person, cannot marry full-blooded Eyaks since there are none left. And there are only about a hundred other half-blood Eyaks alive.
Thus, if Marie's children marry, or if they are married, they will most likely marry or be married to other peoples and their children will then receive even fewer Eyak chromosomes. And, the process will continue until there won't even be any half-blood Eyaks left.
This is often how extinction occurs.
So a kid from Europe learns the language and some gush that he's keeping the language alive.
Big deal. A language is not a people. Genes are us, no matter who "us" is. Change the genes and you change the people.
