South--Newport Beach, aka Vanilla City--Police aren't investigating any possible stabbings again today.

So, dear reader, after reading many of these to the north and south of us columns in which most of the violent crime happens in Chocolate City and not in Vanilla City, which flavor do you prefer for your own family?

No, don't sing kumbaya and talk vague big picture concepts about the wonderful brotherhood of man. Would you feel more comfortable if your spouse and your children were in Chocolate City or Vanilla City?

And, which city would you prefer that Costa Mesa be most like--for you and your family?

HEY, CM PRESS YOU KEEP CALLING FOR A REINDUSTRIALIZATION OF CALIFORNIA AND THE U.S. SO WHY DO YOU KEEP CALLING FOR A REDUCTION OF THE INDUSTRIAL ZONING ON THE WESTSIDE BLUFFS?

Whenever we call for reindustrialization, we get comments from industrialists who have industrial properties on Costa Mesa's Westside Bluffs asking some variant of the above question.

The simple answer is that we are in favor of all levels of industrialization from the cleanest R&D uses to the dirtiest M2 uses. However, we are also in favor of having industrial uses in their proper places--which is not on Costa Mesa's Westside Bluffs that have an ocean and California beach influence.

In fact, one of the reasons that the Westside is the worst part of Costa Mesa is because of the 60 acres of industrial uses on land that should be used for executive homes for upwardly mobile people who would like Newport Beach, but who can't afford it. Build those homes on the Bluffs and watch the Westside become one of the nicest areas in Orange County.

And, of course, building those homes is exactly what the Westside plans are about.
