CM PRESS # 229

NICE COLUMN IN THE OC REGISTER BY BARBARA VENEZIA ABOUT THE ICSC CONVENTION

I've gone to a number of ICSC conventions over the years and they are absolutely a must-do for those in the retail real estate world.  If you want to be a player, this is where you have to go.

If I had to pick two guys to go there to represent Costa Mesa and get some things moving, I couldn't do any better than Mayor Righeimer and Mayor Pro Tem Mensinger. I kid you not.

Both of these guys not only know the talk but they can also do the walk.

Deals aren't always done on the floor of the convention hall, but the contacts made can be invaluable to bring some new businesses to Costa Mesa once everyone goes home and starts thinking about their plans for expansion.  And, when you can pick up the phone and talk to the Mayor or Mayor Pro Tem--because you met them face to face in Las Vegas--and you know that they know the biz, well, Costa Mesa becomes the path of least resistance to opening a new unit.

As the country comes out of the long, long down turn, the movers and shakers are talking about expanding again, and what better city to expand to than Costa Mesa?

With our low business license fees, we offset some of the costs of doing business in California and this makes our city a very attractive market for the right retailers.

I tell you, folks, if I were at the ICSC convention I'd be touting the Westside as an area of our city that is a real find for those smart enough to realize that it is an unpolished gem just waiting to be polished.

Now, the national credit tenant retailers are going to ask for the demographics of the Westside, and they may be turned off by what they see at present, but if it is pointed out to them that the southern part of the Westside will draw customers from Newport Beach, which is just down the hill, and that the City is in the process of helping the Westside become a hip destination location, it will make a big difference to those who are bucks up and who like to play the long dollar instead of the short nickel.

CARPETBAGGER MICHELLE EUNJOO PARK STEEL WANTS TO PARACHUTE IN TO BE THE SUPERVISOR FOR COASTAL OC--BUT SHE HAS NO REAL KNOWLEDGE OF OUR AREA

She probably knows more about Seoul, Korea, where she was born, than about coastal OC.

If he runs, Allan Mansoor would be a much better choice for coastal OC--he has deep roots here and doesn't need a map to find his way around.
