CM PRESS # 220

THE SENIOR CENTER BROUHAHA

[UPDATE 5/12/13: A COMMENTER TELLS THE CM PRESS "Actually, the City gives the Senior Center approximately $650,000 cash and in-kind of which $240,000 is in cash."]

As you may have heard, there's a brouhaha involving the Senior Center on W. 19th Street.

As we understand it, the staff of the Center says that those who want to serve on the Board of Directors must each donate $500 to the Center or they can't serve.

This rightly rankles some of the Board members.

So, at the last City Council meeting, Mayor Righeimer indicated that Board members should not have to pay because they wantt to donate their time to the Center, and that if the Center wants $ 500 from Board members then it should take it out of the money that the City gives the Center each year--something like  $65,000.

We completely agree with the Mayor.

COSTA MESA NEEDS TO DO BETTER--WE NEED CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT OR WE'RE GOING TO SLIP EVEN FURTHER BEHIND

In the rankings of 2,000 High Schools by Newsweek and The Daily Beast, as reported in the Daily Pilot this week HERE (and also mentioned briefly this week in the CM PRESS), the ratings of the five high schools* in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District were given as follows:

Corona del Mar High School was rated 200
Newport Harbor high School was rated 502
Costa Mesa High School was rated 1,150
Estancia High School was rated 1,703

So, we see a  big difference in the scores of high schools in the two cities. The biggest difference is  1,503 points in favor of CDMHS over Estancia, yet the schools are in the same school district.

What does it mean?

Are the teachers better in the two Newport high schools?  Do the two Newport high schools receive more money?  Are the school buildings better in the two Newport high schools?

The answer to each of the above questions is no. Remember, the schools are all in ONE, 'UNIFIED" school district.  The Teachers, the money, the buildings are all on a par.

The answer to the differences in scores is found in the fact that school ratings are largely a function of the communities in which they are located.

It is not the two Costa Mesa high schools that need to improve.  It is the City of Costa Mesa that needs to improve.

*Early College High School was rated 1,075, but since this is a special high school with a small student body, and is  less city specific than the other four high schools, we aren't including it in the above list. We also think the rating may not be accurate for this one.

No future in such a movement, but we should probably be happy that some of  those who don't reproduce don't reproduce.

HOLD THE PRESSES AGAIN--Geoff West has written us to let us know that per Katrina Foley, yesterday, both of her kids are now in Costa Mesa schools.

HERE HE IS IN HIS OWN WORDS: "Martin, thanks for the publicity. Unfortunately, you're working with old news. Per Katrina Foley yesterday - before I wrote to you - BOTH of her sons attend CMHS. But them, to tell the truth doesn't fit your premise, does it? You're such a pathetic human being." on CM PRESS # 220

Yes, we think he meant "then," and that he meant to put in the word "that,"  before "doesn't."

JANUARY 2013 ARTICLE FROM THE OC REGISTER INDICATING AT LEAST ONE OF KATRINA FOLEY'S KIDS GOES TO SCHOOL IN CORONA DEL MAR (Not Costa Mesa--the area that Foley is supposed to represent on the school board)

Here's the relevant part of the above linked OC REGISTER article:

"The league was founded by Newport-Mesa School District board member Katrina Foley in March 2010 at Costa Mesa Middle School, the school Sam [Swanson] [Foley's son] attended at the time."
{snip}
"[Sam] Swanson, now a student and skate team member at Corona del Mar High, said the growth of the Orange County Skateboarding League is remarkable."
Don't get us wrong.  We think that if Ms. Foley has put one or both of her kids in schools in Newport Beach that this is a responsible thing for an upwardly mobile parent to do.  Our gripe is that we don't think a parent who has her kids in a school outside of the area she is supposedly representing (when there is a similar school within her area of representation, such as CMHS) has her heart and mind focused on the area that she has been elected to represent.

PLANNING COMMISSION AGENDA FOR MONDAY, MAY 13, 2013

The last item on the agenda is a verbal presentation by a consultant about Westside improvements along W. 17 and W. 19 streets.

The buzz is that this item may be brought forward to near the start of the meeting.

PERMANENT 19 WEST SIGN TO GO UP SOON

Staff tells us that a permanent 19 West sign should be up within weeks.  This will replace the temporary sign you see to your left.

Hopefully, the Mayor will do some sort of unveiling of the new sign to kick off what may be a serious effort to improve the Westside and make it the great area of our city that is should be.

    1. To Pot: We're glad to learn Ms. Foley's kids are in CM schools. Ms. Foley is very active as a parent, and schools in CM can only benefit when she is involved here on a day to day basis.

  2. Doesnt anybody else feel the signage is just a token to placate people? "look we did something, theres a sign... now lets continue our focus on making harbor blvd home to every burger chain ever"

  3. To Anonymous 12:32: Waddya got against burgers?

Harbor--up near the 405--looks nicer now than it has in years.

Frankly, I'd like a seafood restaurant over there, but it's up to restaurateurs themselves to figure out if they can make it in any given location and then it's up to them to invest the money and go through the brain damage it takes in California's sour business climate to open a restaurant.

  4. You know, you have some good points on here but what is going on with all the comments of black people and living in white neighborhoods? I don't understand the relevance to your posts in this. Why don't you report on white crime? Or how about the meth heads who are white and beg at the gas stations?

    1. The MSM makes sure you know about White crime, but they hide non-White crime. Since Whites are falling victim to violent non-White criminals at an alarming rate, it is important to publish the truth.

    2. Thank you for the response. I guess I have to disagree with you on this one because all I see on the main stream media is non-white crime (unless I am watching commentary from Glen Beck or Sarah Palin who are both unreliable in just about everything). I wish they would talk more about white collar crime, but I suppose that is another conversation.

I still think you have some good points about your criticism with how the City has let itself go by allowing so many apartments and renters take over the City, but your recent comment today in your post about advocating for White interests has me concerned about where your criticisms are rooted in.

Again, I do appreciate your response and honesty.

  5. Yup, I advocate, in my own small way, for White interests. And, I always will. There are very few organizations in the mainstream that help Whites. For example, there's no White Congressional Caucus and very few White Student Unions on college campuses. It goes on and on. Why should Whites be the only group that doesn't have such organizations?
