HOMELESS HOUSING AND SERVICES FOR VIRTUALLY ANY HOMELESS PERSON WHO SHOWS UP IN COSTA MESA APPROVED BY COUNCIL LAST NIGHT
The City Council last night approved homeless housing and services to be offered by the City.
Councilwoman Wendy Leece (ever wanting to have future deniability for bad decisions) asked if the housing could be for people who have lived in Costa Mesa for at least 18 months, and special legal counsel Celeste Brady replied that "fair housing laws would not include exclusivity."
Leece, Monahan and Genis (Righeimer and Mensinger were away at the ICSC convention) then voted for the housing and services.
Like so many bad decisions of our local government, this one won't hit us immediately in such a way that the average stable citizen will be able to make a connection. Instead, we'll see a slow corrosive and cumulative effect as the numbers of homeless people increase in the city.
Drive down Harbor Blvd. any time during the day or early evening and you'll see homeless people from one end to the other--and this vote last night just increased the magnet effect that you always see with such efforts.
Also expect surrounding cities to start clearing their cities of homeless people by directing them to Costa Mesa for the freebies.
You do not rid a park of pigeons by feeding them more.

Costa Mesans pay the ninth highest rate of OC's 32 cities according to a new audit.
Well, of course we do, the trash hauler and the Costa Mesa Sanitary District have a sweetheart contract that doesn't go out for competitive bids.
