CITY COUNCIL USE OUR TAX MONEY WISELY, PLEASE

Well, we're close to that  time of year when the City Council gives some of our tax money to charities.

Here's the important thing to know:  THE CITY COUNCIL DOES NOT HAVE TO GIVE OUR TAX MONEY TO CHARITIES.  It can use that money to fix streets and do other infra-structure repairs on the Westside.

We believe that some Councilmembers aren't aware that they don't have to give the money to charities, but can use it for better purposes to improve Costa Mesa.

Here's how this all goes down.

HUD returns some tax money to Costa Mesa each year.  This money is called Community Development Block Grants (CDBG). The money is to be used to help improve communities.

Because Costa Mesa had lefties on the City Council in the past, a "tradition" was started to give a certain portion (15%) of the money received to various charities that apply for it.

To screen the charity requests, the City Council appointed 3R Committee interviews the charity bosses and looks at their paperwork and then makes recommendations to the City Council which usually rubber stamps the requests.

Then, the charities use the money--sometimes to help illegal aliens and other transients in the city.  Some of the charites just seem to help Hispanics.

The benefit to the stable citizens of Costa Mesa is pretty near zero.

WHAT SHOULD THE CITY COUNCIL DO WITH THE CDBG MONEY THIS YEAR?

The City Council should use ALL the money to fix infra-structure on the Westside and not give any money to the charities.

Start a new tradition, City Council:  Work to improve the Westside in meaningful concrete ways instead of throwing our money away. Fix actual things with the money. Pave streets. Fix sidewalks. Fix walls.

Help all the citizens of Costa Mesa by doing this instead of giving it to charities that will be back again and again asking for more money.

WE'RE STILL HOPING FOR ANSWERS FROM WENDY LEECE
[Yup, we know the photo is blurry. We're trying to bring Ms. Leece into sharp focus.]

As you may recall, back in CM PRESS # 349 we wrote how we had emailed Ms. Leece and asked two simple questions which we will state in a slightly different way here so there's no confusion:

1.  How do you define "I'll continue to do what's best for Costa Mesa"?

2. If you  don't like the plan that the Improvers are using to improve Costa Mesa, then what is your alternative plan?

We don't really mean to badger Ms. Leece, and she doesn't have to answer, but we think readers would like to know where she stands on making our city a better place, and how she plans on helping accomplish this during her second term on the Council.

  1. Finally, a subject worth commenting on. The Hollywood problem is deeper than Jolie or the toothpicks. There isn't a single glamorous leading lady in Hollywood today. The younger top stars like Drew Barrymore and Scarlet Johansson just can't act, and the older ones are in roles that make them look foolish. And I've never understood the fascination with Julia Roberts. I like Jolie but on the larger scheme, you are correct.

  2. Not one single glamorous leading lady today? Hey you got pretty high standards. I would not kick anyone of those 'toothpicks' out of bed.

  3. Thanks for asking the hard questions of Wendy Leece. At this juncture, somebody needs to demand some answers. We need to know who she is really working for. We know it's not the taxpayers.

  4. Hi CM Press

I am a fan of your website and your efforts for CM. I also strongly support your views about spending our tax dollars on infrastructure instead of illegal aliens and charities. If you decide to speak at the next City Council meeting on this subject as you have in the past, please take this as a friendly suggestion.

Speak to them without any anger, frustration or hostility. Try this approach and you may be more affective and help us all.

    Thank you.

  5. No charities at all, Mr. Millard? Compassion is as great a gift as common sense. Both are important.

  6. Well, "donttell..." I have found intelligence and charm to be the most powerful attractions. But that's just me. I'm not saying there aren't pretty actresses out there, I'm saying there is not one that comes to mind who is charming, graceful and intelligent AND pretty.

  7. After many years of donating to the various charities, my husband and I finally wised up. Now we have stopped all charitable giving because we noticed that the money seems to end up in the pockets of high ranking officers, either in the form of outrageous salaries, or "loans". We intend for our money to go for the intended cause, not to further enrich those who are already rich.

We feel that our city council should use city funding solely for the direct benefit of the taxpayers.

You missed the entire point. Throwing money at poor folks actual does not helps them at all. Most of the time it creates a dependency. Those giving get a temporary feeling of pleasure, power and bragging rights; “see I am doing something, blah blah blah.” It is an endless cycle that creates more dependency. The sad part about it is nothing ever gets solved.

We are now at the point in our society where we ALL are in need of these funds. Our streets are crumbing, the sidewalks are bucking, trees cannot be trimmed. Why? No money. And what money we do have YOU Mr. Anonymous want to throw away at pointless charities? It is time to help ourselves.

Mr. Anonymous, if you want to give, be my guest, but use your own money for a change.
