TAGGERS ATTACK CAMERA CREW

We've posted the above story from LA because it gives an example of the fact that taggers are not always harmless--as some in Costa Mesa want citizens to believe.

In addition, we think the way information on graffiti in Costa Mesa is being given to the City Council and citizens needs to be looked into.

The CM PRESS tried unsuccessfully to get supporting data and information on the way graffiti is logged by the CMPD after a recent report to the City Council by the CMPD.

Essentially, the Council was told that most of the graffiti in Costa Mesa is caused by taggers, not gang members.

Here's what we wanted to know: If a 10-year-old kid writes his name 20 tiny times in pencil on a crosswalk pole while he's waiting for the walk signal, is that graffiti considered 20 incidents of graffiti?

And, is one gang slogan on a wall written in 3' tall letters with spray paint, also counted in the same way, i.e. is it logged in (in simple number fashion) as one incident of gang graffiti?

If so, are we wrong in thinking that the final report might then read: "We had 20 incidents of tagger graffiti at that location but only one incident of gang graffiti"?

And, in hearing the above report, might we not expect that out in the living rooms of Costa Mesa we may hear: "You hear that Mabel, we don't got no gang problem. Just one incident of gang graffiti but twenty incidents of art work by those fun loving tagger artists."

You see the problem. There is a qualitative difference in the graffiti.

AND...

Have you noticed that one local poster--a Mansoor and Bever hater--using an anonymous name, is posting crime details in posts at the Daily Pilot that were never publicly reported?

Coming on the heels of the report that a CMPD cop somehow obtained and used a CMPD owned GPS unit to put in a woman's car so he could stalk her, well, it makes you wonder....
