NOW SMITH IS TRYING TO BROWBEAT COUNCILMEMBER BEVER INTO SAYING THERE ARE NO SLUMS IN COSTA MESA
Link

Ah, Smith, then why did the Westside reports name blighted areas of the city that should be bulldozed? And, why is Costa Mesa now in the slum/poverty category with Santa Ana?

And, have you ever visited Shalimar, Mission-Mendoza, Fillmore-Coolidge? These fit the definition of slum.

Oh by the way, there have been gang related murders in each of the above listed slums. And, we believe that they require police action more often than most other areas of the city.

GUESS WHO TRIED TO STOP THE BAD MOUTHING OF COSTA MESA?
[It wasn't Steve Smith. He may have been too busy setting another trash can on fire.]

Councilmember Bever makes a good point in his post in response to Steve Smith's silly column, in which Smith whines about people bad mouthing Costa Mesa.

Here's what Bever wrote (LINK) in the Daily Pilot:

Eric Bever wrote on Apr 15, 2010 12:10 AM:

" BTW Steve, a month or two ago, I was the only council member who asked that we NOT designate the entire city as a "Federal Recovery Zone", which included (I paraphrase) notation of excessive poverty and foreclosures... That recovery zone designation could create a negative perception, and will likely show up in various market analysis documents, which could sway businesses. Do you agree, or disagree with the designation? Did you speak on it at council? if you are interested in defending our city's image, why did you sit that one out? I could have used your help on that. "

The CM PRESS has an answer for Mr. Bever: No, Smith did not speak out against Costa Mesa being put into a slum/poverty category. We know, because we were at the meeting.

In fact, that soft spoken gentleman at the podium who did speak out against this horrible hit to Costa Mesa's reputation, was none other than the CM PRESS.

And, Mr. Bever also has it right when he indicates that this slum/poverty designation put over ALL of Costa Mesa--just as it is over ALL of Santa Ana, will be seen by retailers.

Say, did you also know that the new owners of Triangle Square (HERE) describe it as being in Newport Beach?

Oh, and what about South Coast Plaza and the surrounding area? Where is that located? Why, it's in South Coast Metro. Check the small print to find "Costa Mesa."

The Costa Mesa name is tarnished. And, it's not because some citizens are trying to improve it. It's because some people are pretending the problems don't exist and this is just making them worse.

And, what about demographic and other reports about a city? Any retailer or competent business person can tell you whether a city is a good place for an upscale business without ever going there, just by looking at these reports. A business person in New York doesn't have to come to Costa Mesa to know what the city is like. The reports tell him that.

Those of us who are trying to improve Costa Mesa, aren't letting any cats out of the bag when we point out problems that need to be fixed. What we are doing is trying to make enough noise about the problems so our elected officials will take action just to get us to shut up.

Do you hear that Foley? You want people to stop coming to City Council meetings and telling you about the crime and other problems? Well, instead of baking lasagna for the families of people killed in drive by shootings, why don't you work to get rid of the conditions that breed the problems? Hmmmm?

TEA PARTIES RALLY AROUND THE NATION
Link
Questions still remain (at least with the CM PRESS) about whether this is a genuine movement or not, and, if it is, whether or not it will have legs through the November election and actually defeat some incumbents and elect some people who will change the course of government for the better.

TEA PARTY ORGANIZERS ANXIOUS ABOUT EXTREMISTS
Link

The Tea Parties face a double edged sword. The main stream press wants to portray Tea Partiers as extremists and looks for extremist signs. So, the Tea Party organizers try to keep such extremist signs out of the rallies.

The problem is that "extremism" is being defined so low that the vigor of the Tea Party rallies may be sucked out of them after only the most mealy mouthed signs are allowed. It's hard to get fired up when all the signs just say "We love Mom and Apple Pie!"

  1. Very tragic case in Denver. The victim was targeted and followed because these punks wanted to rob a white person. Also disturbing that some of the same suspects had already been charged with a hate crime spree a few months earlier and were released early! This crime could have been avoided.
