We are our genes and our genes are us. This is true of ants and humans and all other living organisms that we are aware of.

And, Costa Mesa is right next door. So, why does Costa Mesa have slums, gangs, charities up the wazoo, failing schools, a high crime rate and a fleeing middle class?

Answereth (excuse the Biblical patois, but somehow it seemed appropriate) the City Council: "Duh, we don't know. Golly, we can't figger it out. Say, let's take more citizen money and give it to non-profits that help illegal aliens. That should help improve our city."

Seriously, why doesn't the Costa Mesa City Council fix our broken city?

Well, one reason is seen in the lack of priorities. Consider: Mayor Pro Tem Leece is now busy bringing books and book carts to non-profits in the slums instead of working to thin out the slums. In effect, Leece is throwing out the welcome mat for more of the same.

And, one of the non-profits getting Leece's books and book carts is headed up by a woman who wrote that she cried when the Costa Mesa Police Department arrested and deported some illegal aliens.

This woman's non-profit got $ 20,000 of our tax dollars last year after Leece (and others on the Council) voted to give it to her.

MORE DEATHS IN IRAQ
Link

The U.S. should never have invaded Iraq in the first place. Now, the artificial nature of the conflict is being made clear by the U.S. pulling out while pretending we accomplished something.

The major difference between today and a couple of years ago is that Iraq is now forced off the front pages of a compliant dead tree press (and out of the minds of most U.S. citizens) while the internal war rages on. We predicted several years ago, and we stand by the prediction, that eventually Iraq will develop an Islamic government that hates the U.S. more than ever.

And, what of those 5,000 or so American kids who were killed in Iraq? Why, we'll remember their sacrifice forever say the fat cat neocons in D.C. Say, how many of those kids who died for neocon lies, who we will remember forever, can you name? Thought so. They were cannon fodder. Young lives wasted because of the lies of politicians.

SMITH AND LEFTIES UNCLEAR ON "CITY" CONCEPT AND ON CONCEPTS OF PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY, SELF-RELIANCE AND ENLIGHTENED SELF-INTEREST
Link

Before reading on, it'd be helpful if you first read Steve Smith's column in the link above. Then, read what follows below to see why we think Smith is mistaken.

Personal Responsibility, Self-Reliance, Enlightened Self-Interest
The heart of this controversy doesn't start with basketball. It starts with one's core philosophy about life and society.

The traditional American philosophy included concepts of personal responsibility, self-reliance and enlightened self-interest. That's what helped build this nation.

Some of us still believe in these concepts. These concepts mean that one takes care of one's self first. When everyone follows these three concepts we all benefit.

But, these three concepts: personal responsibility, self-reliance, enlightened self-interest only start with the individual. To be effective, they must grow in ever widening spiraling circles to include the family, the neighborhood, the city, the county, the state, the nation.

This is to say, the individual takes care of the individual, the family takes care of the family, the neighborhood takes care of the neighborhood, the city takes care of the city. Same with the county, the state and the nation. But, each smaller circle must first take care of those inside before helping those outside.

When these concepts of personal responsibility, self-reliance and enlightened self-interest hold sway and become part of the zeitgeist, everyone is pulling their own weight and the society as a whole moves forward.

If, however, a society doesn't value these concepts, many people, many families, many neighborhoods, many cities, many counties, many states and many nations simply rely on someone else to do everything for them, and the society begins faltering.

Now, to basketball and Steve Smith
In his latest column (here's the link again), Smith complains about the City of Costa Mesa acting to help the citizens of Costa Mesa before citizens of other cities.

The nub of the matter is this: The Citizens of Costa Mesa live and vote here and have the quality of their lives tied to what transpires in this City that is theirs. They are members of the "club."

Next door to us are other cities. These other cities have the responsibility to care for their citizens. They are members of their own clubs.

Last year, a pay-to-play adult basketball league (a business), from another city, wanted to use a Costa Mesa public facility (means the citizens of Costa Mesa own it).

In order for that basketball league business to use the Costa Mesa public facility, located next to the downtown library, Costa Mesans would have to be kicked out of the facility, and the parking lot for the library and surrounding uses would be impacted by people coming to the area to use what belongs to the displaced Costa Mesans.

This had the potential to inconvenience Costa Mesans who not only wanted to use the sports facility (that they paid for), but also the library (that they paid for) and the civic center building (that they paid for) and the adjacent park (that they paid for). There were also issues of traffic, wear and tear on our streets and facilities, and the need for additional city employee time to meet the needs of large crowds gathered in one spot.

Smith argues that Costa Mesa should have simply let the pay-for-play league take the civic center area over because the potential money they would pay would be more than would be received from Costa Mesans.

We believe this would be bad for Costa Mesa and its citizens.

If any City does not act in the best interests of the citizens who live there but which acts to benefit citizens and businesses from other cities, then why have the city at all?

What's the point of having a city? Just abolish the city and say we have no borders so if the citizens of this piece of land make it a desirable place to live (and to play basketball) and citizens of other places have not shown the personal responsibility, the self-reliance and the enlightened self-interest to make their places nice places to live (and play basketball), then let's just let them swarm our place and force us out.

Or to put it in more succinct terms: If a bird fouls its own nest, or doesn't build a proper nest, should it be allowed to just move into a nest of other birds that have not fouled theirs or who have built proper nests? Let each bird take care of its own nest.

Now, dear reader, you may be saying to yourself: "Why, the CM PRESS has also described the situation with illegal aliens who have flocked to Costa Mesa and who use the charities and other freebies instead of taking personal responsibility and practicing self-reliance and enlightened self-interest to make their own cities in their own countries better places."

We can only reply: Core principles are core principles and if they come from natural laws as do the concepts of personal responsibility, self-reliance and enlightened self-interest then they often do apply to many other situations with similar characteristics.

Now, behind all of this is the concept of self-preservation.... Never mind, what started off as a short column, could end up book length.

  1. We deserve answers about why E-verify is not being used in this City. If we are the trailblazers on this issue, we need to lead by example. I agree fully with the article.
