Racial matter? Yes and No.

The CM PRESS has looked at this controversy and read the police reports (here) and we have a slightly different take on this than you may have read elsewhere.

Admittedly,we're filling in gaps with what we know of human psychology and the real world, in addition to what we've read, and we're also making tentative but reasonable assumptions as we try to recreate the scene.

Essentially, Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., who is black, believes he was treated unfairly because Sgt. James Crowley, a white cop, is a racist (meaning, here, the white cop hates blacks or in some way treats them with less respect than he treats whites under similar circumstances).

Sgt. Crowley seems genuinely befuddled by the charge and denies it, but is now being pushed into proving that some of his best friends are black.

So, what's really going on here? Maybe something like the following.

From everything we've read and can surmise, Sgt. Crowley seems to be a straight-arrow, by the book cop; a real boy scout and saint--read, he's stiff and uptight.

Our guess is that Crowley would have treated a white professor the same as he treated Gates, but a white professor (being white) would probably not have been as belligerent as Gates and the situation would have been diffused.

Gates seems to have a racial chip on his shoulder, and instead of seeing the cop--and we mean, the cop's facial expressions, body language and everything else--as being the product of that white cop's natural stiffness, he instead saw it as an anti-black attitude.

In other words, we think Gates may have gotten his dander up as a result of many non-verbal cues from the cop, as well as the cop's tone of voice, and that's what set Gates off.

From Gates' perspective, here he was in his own home and Crowley "invaded," that home. Crowley probably also took a dominant, muscles tensed, ready-to-fight stance and probably spoke in a command voice as he was trained to do in order to control the situation.

For his part, Crowley was just doing what he was trained to do and was trying to make sure that Gates really wasn't a burglar.

Crowley apparently saw nothing wrong in what he was doing and race was probably the furthest thing from his mind. That may have been a mistake. Had he been less stiff and formal and understood a little about racial differences, the tension probably would have been diffused.

In other words, we think if Crowley had taken a relaxed but professional stance and had just politely and in a friendly conversational tone of voice asked for ID and explained the situation to Gates, that Gates wouldn't have had his buttons pushed as they apparently were pushed.

So, as we asked at the top of this column, was this a racial matter?

The answer, again, is yes and no. It was racial in the sense that Crowley, as a white person, has a natural stiffness about him, and Gates, as a black person, has less stiffness about him and reacted to the white cop the same way he would have reacted to a black cop if the black cop had acted like the white cop.

Don't get it? Or, perhaps you reject our forensic analysis? Tell us, then, why there was such a difference in opinion between blacks and whites to the Rodney King matter and the O.J trial?

Tell us why Korean grocers in South Central LA are taking classes on how to smile and be less stiff so they won't offend their mostly black customers.

It comes down to psychology and a little understanding of human differences that are both inborn and acquired.

Oh, and white people really can't dance--ah, except for the Irish; if you call that stiff as a board, jumping up and down and not moving your arms stuff, dancing. Neither can Koreans. Sorry. It's that stiffness thing.

THE CM PRESS'S BROAD VIEW ON HEALTH CARE
1. Citizens of the U.S. should get free health care. Their taxes should benefit them.
2. There must be tort reform.
3. A physician should get a free medical education in exchange for working in free medical service for a set number of years while receiving a living salary.
4. Citizens and physicians should have a right to opt out of the above system if they choose a different path, i.e. they can keep things as they are now or come up with alternates to the above.

In our opinion, one of the main problems with Obama's world view on health care is that he is not bringing in tort reform which we see as a necessary part of a proper system.

ANOTHER DUMB-WATER TALE

The City of Costa Mesa is almost broke. Part of the reason why this is so, is because the City has been lavishing huge salaries and benefits on some employees, including routinely paying many firefighters more than $ 60,000 per year just in overtime.

So, what did the City Council vote to do on Tuesday?

Why, buy the firefighters a shiny new hook and ladder fire truck for $1,135,659.80 to replace a perfectly good hook and ladder truck that we could have kept in service through this financial crisis.

It's a matter of priorities. Our City has them screwed up.

Here are Mr. Bever's comments that appear in the Daily Pilot (LINK) about Costa Mesa booting Costa Mesans out of the gym that these citizens own and replacing them with people from Santa Ana.

Could it be that Hillary was trying to get a psychological advantage by wearing the color that is associated with holy men in Thailand?

We ran into Rodney years ago when we went to talk to our film agent who had a ground floor office in a single story building in Hollywood with a glass door opening to the sidewalk.

As we approached the door, we could see Rodney on the inside looking out at us. As we reached for the door, Rodney suddenly locked the door on us. No big deal, his mother opened it a few minutes later.

"Cute trick, kid,what's your name?"

WE WENT TO THE COSTA MESA CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT...

DA CITTY WIF A HART

We once wrote a short story about an unnamed city where IQ's started dropping as a result of people drinking certain bottled water in the city.

We called the water dumb water. Those in the unnamed city who didn't drink the dumb water retained their previous IQ levels. But they were few in number.

Many of those drinking the dumb water were the unnamed city's leaders and the pillars of the community, who received free bottles of the dumb water from the local water district which got the water from a specific well in the city.

The results were subtle and not at all catastrophic, but the quality of life in the unnamed city started falling as the city's leaders kept making many small bad decisions while justifying those decisions with the usual platitudes.

Things in the unnamed city were just a little off kilter--not things that would ordinarly be noticed by people with IQ's in the 55 to 70 range--but it was the cumulative effect of all these little things that added up to ruin the city.

Soon, the schools in the city were showing low student scores, but the leaders gave out awards to "outstanding schools"--which they defined as schools that had student scores that were better than the worst, even though they weren't very good at all.

Crime increased in the unnamed city, but the leaders would even find excuses for this and citizens would smile and nod and just accept the higher crime rates.

The unnamed city's budget was a mess as a result of many bad decisions. More justifications followed.

City leaders kept spending money on things that weren't needed--like a bike trail--while not spending money on things that were needed, and this further ruined the city.

Fortunately for the leaders, most of the people in the unnamed city had also been drinking dumb water, so these citizens just nodded their heads and gave slack jawed smiles as their leaders kept giving out platitudes.

"we hav da bestest citty employes of any citty," they would say and write, and the citizens would nod and smile.

"an we have the bestest citty in da state,"the leaders would say as they puffed up their chests. Again, the citizens would nod their approval and pat themselves on the back while smiling at each other with moist eyes because they were so lucky to live in such a great place.

One day, a visitor from another state drove through the unnamed city and noticed little things that weren't right--things that were stupid. Things that kept the city on the wrong side of the Bell Curve and the wrong side of the tracks.

Then, as the visitor drove on, he reached the unnamed city's border with the adjacent city where no one had been drinking dumb water. And, he passed into Newport Beach, ooops....

POSTSCRIPT:

Some of the people from the unnamed city with the lowered IQ's read the short story (while moving their lips) and replied in letters to the local newspaper in the following fashion:

"you ain't foolin' me wif dis unnamed citty bidness i thinks you talkin bout dis here citty. if ya donut lik dis grate citty, youse shud moves sumplace else. i says luv it of leaves it!!!!!!"

"wese a citty wif a hart we dont wana be lik newpot beech, cause dey thinks dey to gud fer us."

So the citty wif a hart continued to fall to ever lower levels and the residents just kept drinking the dumb water and didn't really notice it. Crime increased. The Westside continued to rot. The middle class moved away. The city fell to Third World levels. This was okay, though, because IQ's also continued to fall, and no one noticed the decline of the city.

Being dumb means you don't notice many things and you just accept lower standards and you don't question city officials or speak out.

As we said, we went to the City Council meeting last night....

ABOUT OUR REGULAR TO THE NORTH AND SOUTH OF US FEATURE
An anonymous reader wants to know why we didn't include the Newport Beach pot bust as a crime incident under Newport Beach--you see, this reader apparently wants to be sure you know that there are whites involved in crime and/or that crime also occurs in Newport Beach (Don't you already know this?).

The answer is simple. In the To the North and South of Us feature, we contrast violent crimes, that usually fall under the category of street crimes (which includes home invasions, etc.), that happen almost daily in Santa Ana with the lack of similar crimes in Newport Beach.

We don't include victimless crimes or white collar crimes--just the violent stabbings, shootings, muggings, car jackings, and similar things that occur on the streets of the two cities. We also don't usually include bank robberies and similar crimes unless they're violent.

And, as in the case in the story immediately below this one, since the OCR put in a racial/ethnic description of the perp as white, we decided to feature this as it's own story, based on the OCR's selective use of racial/ethnic descriptions, instead of putting it in the To the North and South of Us feature. # # #

This has to be frustrating to Dr. Peter Higgs who is now 80-years-old and who is almost certain to get the Nobel Prize in physics if the LHC finds the sub-atomic particle named after him (the Higgs Boson) that Higgs theorizes will prove his theory of the Higgs Field that makes existence possible by imparting mass to everything in existence.


In simplest terms, according to Higgs, without the Higgs Field and the Higgs Boson, nothing would exist as we know it in the universe. No stars, no planets, no people, nothing. That's why some have called the Higgs Boson, the God Particle, a name which Higgs and most physicists don't like.


Although the Fermi Lab (LINK) in Chicago is also trying to find the Higgs Boson, it is generally believed that its Tevatron Collider isn't powerful enough to do the job.

OUR COMMENT ON HUD GRANTS AND OTHER FUNDS

Folks, the CM PRESS has long said that Costa Mesa has screwed up priorities and that our local government spends too much money on things that the CM PRESS puts in the fish rather than fish hook column.

Costa Mesa should be using HUD and other money to thin out the slums. This is the stuff of fish hooks not fish.

Instead, the City spends too much money on resurfacing streets and nothing on thinning out the slums. This is fish. And, that's what the City is going to do now that HUD said forget the bike trail.

And, when crime keeps increasing from the slums, the City just sends in more police. Again, this is fish, not fish hooks.

Remove the slums, and the slum problems will be gone and they won't return. This is the fish hook approach.

Send in a few more cops because of a problem on Tuesday and you'll still have more problems on Wednesday. This is the fish approach.

Stop giving out fish, Costa Mesa. Give out fish hooks.

COLIN MCCARTHY--PLANNING COMMISSIONER

As we've previously written, the Planning Commission and the Parks and Recreation Commission often serve as farm teams for the City Council, i.e. the Commissioners often learn the ropes on the Commissions and many then run for the City Council with support of various of the Councilmembers and the supporters of the Councilmembers.

One such person is Colin McCarthy who is now on the Planning Commission and who is something of a fast tracker to the Council. Or, is he?

At this week's Planning Commission meeting, McCarthy suddenly said from the dais that he was going to give up his pay as a Commissioner to help the City with its financial crisis, and McCarthy specifically named the Recreation Vehicle as what he wanted to support. He also asked the other Commissioners to join him in giving up their pay.

Although the other Commissioners were polite and collegial--one even said that he knew McCarthy wasn't grandstanding (read, he probably did feel that McCarthy was grandstanding), they all declined to give up their pay, but all were put on the spot and apparently made to feel uncomfortable to the point where each told about the charity work that each did.

We're sure that many on the dais and in the audience felt that McCarthy's comments from the dais were out of place. Was it an intentional ambush of the other Commissioners or was McCarthy just suddenly moved by the milk of human kindness? We wanted to know.

Also, given the fact that many activists in the City feel the Recreation Vehicle is a waste of money, we wanted to get McCarthy's comments on this and other matters. So, we sent him an email. As of this writing, McCarthy hasn't replied. If he does reply, we'll let you know.

STILL NO NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN 'HATE CRIME'

It's been thirteen days since a Latina claimed some white guys attacked her. Even white-hating lefties are now going soft on this story. Could it be that these true-believers in white hate and the emergence of a Fourth Reich have some doubts about the story? LINK

We'd really like to see the FBI investigate this case, because if it turns out to be a hate-hoax, we don't have a lot of confidence that the local police will reveal that fact. There are too many lefty bigs who have rushed in and made public statements bemoaning the "hate," whose reputations will be diminished just a little if this is a hoax.

And, if it's shown that this is a hoax, what will the hoaxer be charged with? Filing a false police report? Nothing more?

Frankly, hate-hoaxes amount to blood libel against an entire people and oftentimes what happens is the evil seed of false ideas is planted in the sub-conscious minds of others in such a way that they are thereafter blinded to reality.

MEANWHILE, IN COSTA MESA...

And, speaking of this, you may recall that we previously reported on a few individuals in the CMPD who seem to be blinded to reality. One of these guys gave a lecture about "white gangs" to students at Costa Mesa High School and the lecture used material from a left-wing group with an agenda. Folks, there are no white gangs at Costa Mesa High School.

Then, the CMPD presented a report on gangs to the Costa Mesa City Council in which it said, in a few toss away words that could easily be missed, that Costa Mesa has no white gangs.

No white gangs. There it was in black and white from the CMPD. Okay. But, the report then went on to discuss white gangs (by race)--we kid you not--but failed to say that the gangs in Costa Mesa are almost exclusively Latino. In fact, the report didn't use the words "Latino," Hispanic," "Mexican," "Illegal aliens," "Illegal immigrants,"or anything similar to describe the true nature of the gang problem in Costa Mesa.

The way the report was written, a casual reader might think the Latino gangs, with several hundred members in Costa Mesa, are actually white gangs. They're not.

We recently received a message from a local politician who, with evident glee, sent us a report about some taggers who were recently caught in Costa Mesa who are white kids. The almost orgasmic note the politician sent was: "See, not all criminals are Latinos."

That's the kind of stupid statement that comes from those who have internalized anti-white rhetoric and phony hate crime reports and who score low on the discernment scale.

We don't know anyone who says that all criminals are Latino or are all this or all that. Is it really necessary to say that criminals come in all colors? If so, then we need to add that all colors are not equally represented in crime statistics, and to understand the crime problem we need to look at those statistics.

We also know that most violent street crime in Costa Mesa is non-white in origin and has a strong nexus with the Westside, with the slums and with illegal immigration.

If we are to solve our high violent crime problem in Costa Mesa, we need to understand the true nature of the problem instead of trying to be PC about it.

Note: Costa Mesa's crime rate is up more than 36% over last year's rate. Must be those non-existent "white" gangs causing the problem. Right?

FAIRGROUNDS TO BE SOLD

Governor S. wants to sell the fairgrounds, and tonight the OC Fair Board of Directors voted to go along with his wishes.

Despite the murmurs that Costa Mesa is somehow going to keep the fairgrounds running as it is now by using our zoning powers, don't count on it.

Our guess is that the annual OC FAIR will move to the Great Park, and that the Costa Mesa fairgrounds will eventually be used for homes, businesses and some college uses.

SOBECA CALLED COOL BY FOLEY AND THE WESTSIDE TAKES A HIT BY BEVER (photo of THE LAB)

At yesterday's joint City Council/Planning Commission meeting, one of the items up for discussion was whether or not to expand the types of permitted by-right uses in SOBECA, West 19th Street and on the Westside Bluffs.

WHAT THIS MEANS AND WHAT THE CM PRESS SUPPORTED

At the present time, primarily due to the poor economy, there is very little change happening on the Westside Bluffs.

By expanding the by-right uses for the Westside Bluffs from the presently allowed industrial uses and live work units to include various types of retail stores including coffee shops, restaurants, art studios and more, those who want to buy industrial buildings and convert them to these uses wouldn't have to obtain a Minor Conditional Use Permit that costs about $ 1,100 and takes anywhere from weeks to months to obtain, but could simply buy the buildings, bring them up to code and open the doors for business.

This easy-in approach for those who can help transform the Bluffs is what the CM PRESS supports, with the additional proviso that such uses also add additional parking to the new uses of the industrial buildings to comply with the parking codes for the new uses.

For example, an industrial building is now required to provide 1.5 to 3 parking spaces per 1,000 square feet of building, depending on its size, but some of the retail uses that might move into industrial buildings require 4 parking spaces per 1,000 square feet of building. The CM PRESS position is, to be precise, to require the higher parking standard for the re-use by retailers of the industrial buildings.

TO BE CLEAR

As things now stand, if someone wants to buy industrial buildings on the Westside Bluffs, tear them down and put in new buildings, they can get the by-right uses for these properties. The discussion last night was about re-using the present industrial buildings for by-right uses. The CM PRESS believes that in this lousy economy, the re-use of the buildings is what will start bringing in the changes many say they want.

WHAT BEVER DID

Councilmember Bever effectively killed off the idea of letting the industrial buildings on the Westside Bluffs be used as outlined above and said that such a use would be a disincentive to improving the Bluffs. (?)

We're not sure what Bever's reasoning is in this regard, but his comments were well received by those in the room who have been trying for years to kill off the revitalization of the Westside.

It may be that Bever believes that developers will come in and pay full price for an industrial building, tear it down and then rebuild a more conventional retail building. In the three years that the plans to revitalize the Westside have been in effect, that hasn't happened, and with the present economy, it's not likely to happen.

Maybe Bever has a sharper pencil than most small developers and figures that a developer can somehow make a profit by paying full price for a perfectly good building, tear it down, and then build something else on the empty lot as though the developer just bought empty land in the first place. We'd like to see the calculations that make that work on the Westside Bluffs--with its many small lots--in this economy.

After a little discussion, the Westside was removed from consideration for the by-right uses and the focus was put on only allowing such by-right uses for SOBECA, way across town in north Costa Mesa.

SOBECA

As you may know, SOBECA is the area around Baker Street and Bristol that includes The LAB, The Camp and an increasing number of other hip businesses in an artsy-craftsy mix in former industrial buildings.

FOLEY'S "COOL" COMMENT

One of the streets in SOBECA is Randolph Street. Councilperson Foley said that recently she was looking for a new location for her law office and wanted to rent space on Randolph because the street is "cool," (she's right), but that because a law office was not by-right permitted she rented space in Newport Beach instead.

She also pointed out that under present rules, the by-right uses for Randolph Street are helping keep the area industrial instead of transforming it.

Foley is right about Randolph Street and the reason why it's not transforming fast enough, but the same principle applies to the Westside Bluffs.

THE BACK STORY

What you may not be aware of is that there is a mostly unspoken rivalry going on between SOBECA and the Westside as to which area will become the "cool" artsy-craftsy part of Costa Mesa.

So far, SOBECA is winning and the Westside is languishing.

In our opinion, Bever helped SOBECA last night, and hurt the Westside.

SO WHY DIDN'T SOME WESTSIDERS SHOW UP TO SUPPORT THE WESTSIDE?

The CM PRESS was the only supporter of the Westside at the meeting yesterday.

Those Westside activists who have also been calling for making the Westside cool were apparently too busy or perhaps they just relied on Bever to protect their interests.

Well, Westside activists, you can now visit a cool area, but it's not where you live and work, it's SOBECA. And, SOBECA is what many of us had envisioned for the Westside.

By the way, one of the coolest stores on the Westside: eVocal has now closed.

Had the Westside been made cool, eVocal might have been a raging success. However, not many people want to travel to a crime ridden ghetto to a rare cool store. One store does not a destination location make, saith the poet. Most people will, however, travel to a whole cool neighborhood--SOBECA.
