A problem for Trump is that he is now showing that he is at 41% in national polls--a very high level--and if he drops at all after the debate, the Trump haters will all scream that he is losing support.
The principle here is that inflated numbers before a rally or event will make anything less than those numbers look like a failure. For example, claim you'll have 20,000 people at your event and if you only have 15,000, those opposed to you will call it a failure.
